Fishing in Loreto

Miles away from anywhere, the stunning town of Loreto is like a world of its own. With rocky structures sticking out of the crystal blue waters as you look towards the islands, you’ll be in dreamland before you even think of the fishing. But don’t forget about it! The town’s namesake National Marine Park is home to over 800 fish and marine species, so rest assured that you’re in for a treat when you discover what Loreto, Mexico, fishing is all about!

There’s no way we could list all the fish you could find here, but some true Mexican favorites top the list of targeted species. You’ll find Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and Broomtail Grouper close to shore. Head a little further out and Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Yellowtail Amberjack are the name of the game. And that’s not all! Blue Marlin and Sailfish round off the prized list of species on offer, giving you the chance to land a trophy catch.

The Loreto fishing scene is open 365 days a year, so there’s never a bad time to come and visit. While it is possible to spend a few hours on the water, most captains prefer to spend at least six hours on the water, with the majority of trips lasting a full day. And you should, too! What better way to get the most out of your fishing adventure than by targeting as many fish as possible, and heading back to shore with a cooler full and a trophy to your name?

Rules & Regulations

Every angler casting a line out of Loreto will need to purchase a Mexico sportfishing license. Some captains will provide them for everyone on board but, if yours doesn’t, it’s not a hassle to get one. Grab yours online or at the dock before embarking on your charter, and you’ll be fishing within the law.

Loreto Fishing Seasons

January
If you’re visiting Loreto in January, get ready to go after Yellowtail. They may not be easy to catch, but that makes the experience more rewarding. Roosterfish, Snapper, and Grouper are active, as well.
February

The weather is fair, but the winds can be quite strong in February. Cooler waters are the perfect habitat for Bonito, Sierra Mackerel, Roosterfish, Snapper, and Yellowtail Amberjack inshore.

March

It’s becoming warmer in Loreto, and the fishing landscape is slowly changing, but you can still reel in a good amount of Grouper and Snapper, and Yellowtail fishing is still going strong.

April
Spring is in full swing, which means that Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna are becoming more and more present. April is also one of the best months to go after Snapper and Grouper.
May
Come May, you can look forward to Striped, Blue, and an occasional Black Marlin roaming the surface hungry and ready to bite. If you want to land a Yellowtail, this is your last chance to do it.
June
Summer is here, and so are the ultimate catches that include Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, huge Roosterfish, and of course Bull Mahi Mahi. Choose your prey and head out!
July

It’s time for the “Fishin' for the Mission” Mahi Mahi tournament, and everything else you can think of is on the prowl as well. This means Sailfish, Marlin, Grouper, Snapper, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo, to name a few.

August

Whatever you want to target in August, chances are you’ll be very successful. You can hook Sailfish and Marlin just five miles from shore, Mahi Mahi is almost everywhere, and Tuna isn’t giving up, either.

September

Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin are in the cards, as well as Sailfish. There’s plenty of Wahoo cruising around, and Roosterfish, Snapper, and Grouper are happy to gulp the bait, too.

October

Sailfish is slowly moving on toward the Pacific, but there’s still time to get your personal record in October. Mahi Mahi and Marlin are another frequent catch, along with Wahoo and Roosterfish.

November
This is the last hurrah for Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin, as they begin migrating to warmer waters for the winter. Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Snapper, and Roosterfish are the most popular prey.

December

In December, winds are picking up, the Sea of Cortez is cooling down, and so is the bite. You can still catch a bit of everything, and the fishery is excellent, just not as wild as during summer.
