Fishing in Isla Mujeres
With beautiful sun-drenched beaches and a tranquil atmosphere, Isla Mujeres is the Yucatan Peninsula’s own little slice of paradise. It’s also a real haven for water-lovers, including snorkelers, divers, and, of course, anglers! An Isla Mujeres fishing adventure is something that shouldn’t be missed. It’s surrounded by reefs brimming with tasty bottom fish, provides access to the prolific Yucatan Channel, and even offers up some flats fishing action.
Firstly, there’s the majestic Mesoamerican Reef. Just and a short journey out onto the water will see you encountering Grouper, Snapper, Hogfish, Triggerfish, Amberjack, and Barracuda. More into deep sea fishing action? Head out around 20–30 miles offshore, and you’ll reach the Yucatan Channel – AKA the playground of big game fish. Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna...all the Gulf of Mexico’s major players pass through these waters!
Isla Mujeres’ inshore action is nothing short of spectacular, either. You can step out of your hotel and generally be battling Bonefish within minutes, there are so many productive flats fisheries here. But ask any local angler, and they’ll usually recommend the Isla Blanca flats. Why? Fewer anglers visit these waters, and you’ll come across Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook, otherwise known as an “Inshore Super Grand Slam,” as well as Jacks and Barracuda.
Local charter captains provide a whole variety of fishing trips, running anywhere from four to over nine hours. Although it’s possible to explore the flats, reef, or offshore waters on a shorter trip, most locals recommend opting for a longer adventure. Newbies and families can mix up fishing with some swimming or snorkeling, and hardcore anglers can try for that trophy catch!
You’ll need a valid Mexico fishing license in order to explore Isla Mujeres’ waters. The good news is, if you’re casting off alongside a local charter captain, this will be covered for you.
