The island of Cozumel is one of the most famous fishing locations this side of Mexico – and for good reason, too! It’s surrounded by a variety of impressively diverse waterways. There’s the majestic coral reef, deep offshore waters, and plenty of winding inshore flats and lagoons. There’s always something biting here, but if it’s Billfish or a big game bonanza you’re after, an offshore angling adventure during the summer months is especially productive. Thanks to this island’s proximity to seriously deep waters, you’ll be able to start dropping your lines around half an hour from shore. Expect to encounter Mackerel and Tuna around the reefs, as well as Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Marlin in deeper waters.
If you’re more of an inshore fanatic, however, Cozumel still has plenty of exciting action to offer. There are flats located within walking distance from the center of town, as well as northern fish-filled lagoons. Although newbies and families can get acquainted with the flats and lagoons on a half day trip, a full day is the best option for anglers wanting to hook a whole host of famous fish.
