Fishing in Orange Beach

Orange Beach fishing is one of Alabama’s major tourist attractions. Home to one of the biggest charter fleets in the Gulf and the largest artificial reef ecosystem in the entire US, this is every saltwater angler's dream destination.

Start your visit by popping over to the muddy flats inshore, where you’ll come across some prized Gulf creatures. Hit Perdido Bay and its neighboring lagoons and bayous, and you could land Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Pompano, Sheepshead, and many more. Trips can last from as little as a couple of hours to a full day, with one thing for sure – success!

The next step is heading to the nearshore reefs that make Orange Beach fishing charters so popular. As with everywhere in the Gulf, Red Snapper is a favorite, and they grow to incredible sizes here. Then come the delicious Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Groupers, and tough-fighting Cobia and Amberjack, and you’ll wonder where the day went!

If you’re looking for a longer trip, then a deep sea fishing adventure is in store. Head anywhere from 60 to 120 miles offshore and battle it out with monster Marlin, Wahoo, and Sailfish, along with plenty of delicious Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi to take back to shore. You’ll need at least 24 hours on the water, but it’s definitely worth it.

Rules & Regulations

You won’t need a license when fishing aboard a charter in Orange Beach. Your professional captain will have you covered and will make sure that you stay within all the permitted size and bag limits.

Orange Beach Fishing Seasons

January

Start the year in style with some rod-bending action in the deep. Offshore fishing for Grouper is good, with 10-12 hour trips yielding the best results, while you can still catch plenty of delicious fish inshore, too.

February

The annual Black Drum migration begins, so get ready to fill your buckets with some 30-50 pounders! Meanwhile, the action offshore is going strong, with an overnight trip giving the potential for Tuna.

March

Spring Break arrives, but beware of the strong winds when you head to the deep.If you find a calm day, then you'll want to take advantage of the Cobia migration offshore, along with plenty of Amberjack and Grouper.

April

The waters start to heat up and so does the fishing – wherever you are. Cobia come close to the coast, so you can sight cast for them on a charter, while an inshore trip will target Redfish, Trout, and Flounder.

May

It may be spring, but you'll feel like summer has arrived. The fishing gets better and better, with the arrival of the offshore season. Troll for Wahoo and Mackerel, look out for Cobia, or make the most of the bottom fish bite.

June

The weather is stable and the seas are calm, so all you need to do is make sure you come prepared for the heat. Red Snapper season usually opens now, so get ready for a flurry of activity targeting these prized fish!

July

Book early to avoid disappointment, as peak season has arrived Orange Beach. The beaches fill up and so do the charter boats, with one fish on everyone's mind – Red Snapper. Come and get your fill of these beauties!

August

Avoid the heat on an early morning or evening trip and enjoy the sunrise or sunsetset over the unbelievably still waters. Just like last month, the fishing is on top form, with offshore yielding its best results.

September

While peak season may be over, the weather is only getting better here. No more showers mean the waters are usually calm and the bite is excellent, with Redfish testing your line inshore, and Marlin offshore.

October

Bottom fish continue to bite along the reefs, even though the weather is changing, while Trout and Redfish are the inshore stars. There are plenty of guides ready to take you out, so what are you waiting for?

November

With the weather starting to disrupt the chances to go offshore, attention shifts inshore for winter. The good news is that some of the most prized fish can be found in the shallows, as Bull Redfish become commonplace!

December

Fishing is a 365-day-a-year business in Orange Beach, so get ready to feast on some delicious fish for the holidays. Head inshore for monster Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder, and you can fill the freezer!
