Fishing in Marco Island

Looking for an angling adventure where you can cast your line in offshore waters and also explore Southwest Florida’s stunning backcountry? Hop aboard one of the many Marco Island fishing charters that depart from this barrier island. Providing access to the prolific Ten Thousand Islands, as well as the deep waters of the Gulf, Marco Island will offer you angling opportunities that you simply won’t find anywhere else!

All about inshore fishing? There’s no better place to start than Marco Island. You’ll have the Ten Thousand Islands at your disposal, as well as Rookery Bay. Get ready to drift through this seemingly endless chain of mangrove islands as you search for Tarpon, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Snook, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano, and Sheepshead. You’ll be able to cast your line just a few minutes from the dock, which means even a half day trip yields excellent results.

Then there’s the Gulf of Mexico, located to the west of Marco Island. Drop your line over nearshore reefs and wrecks for Tripletail, Goliath Grouper, King Mackerel, Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, and Sharks. Looking for a classic deep sea fishing experience? Look out for trips that’ll take you 20+ miles from shore, where you’ll come across Cobia, Amberjack, Permit, and Barracuda, as well as huge Snapper and Grouper. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to opt for a full or extended full day trip.

Plenty of charters are dotted around Marco Island, with Caxambas Park, Rose Marina, and the Calusa Island Marina being popular departure points. Captains in the area offer a wide variety of trips, suited to anglers of all ages and skill levels, with combo trips being popular too. Why not combine fishing with some shelling or sightseeing?

Marco Island Fishing Seasons

January
Winter is a great time to explore the Ten Thousand Islands, where you can land Redfish, Speckled Trout, Sheepshead, Jack Crevalle, and more. Or try your luck bottom fishing the nearshore reefs for something delicious.
February

While fishing less than 10 miles from shore you might catch Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, Pompano, Sheepshead, Redfish, Speckled Trout, and much more. Average temperatures at this time of year vary between 54-73°F.

March
As the weather starts to heat up so does the fishing! Snook are appearing more inshore while Barracuda are showing up near the reefs. In some years, the Snook season opens as early as March.
April
By now the Tarpon are arriving, meaning you can add the Silver King to your inshore checklist. The fishing nearshore and offshore is starting to pick up momentum, with Barracuda, Cobia, and Goliath Grouper on the horizon.
May

May is a great time to be on the water, anywhere from the backwaters to the deep sea. The season for Gag Grouper and Red Snapper may finally be open, making a trip to the reefs even more exciting.

June
Many visiting anglers flock to Marco Island in June, hoping to get in on the Tarpon action while it’s hot! Almost every other species is biting now, too, from Snook and Redfish to Cobia and a variety of Sharks.
July
July usually marks the end of Tarpon’s peak season, though you might hook into the Silver King until early fall. You can expect some of Marco Island’s hottest weather at this time of year, with temperatures between 73-88°F.
August
The summer heat continues to simmer. As always, the backwaters offer stellar game fishing opportunities, or head offshore and troll near the reefs for Barracuda and Cobia.
September
If you haven’t made it offshore yet, now is the time! You can still catch Barracuda, Cobia, Goliath Grouper, and now King Mackerel. Bottom fish for some Snapper and Grouper while you’re at it.
October
Autumn is a great time to fish the backwaters for Redfish, Speckled Trout, and other inshore species. Then again, the reef fishing isn’t bad either--you can still catch anything from Barracuda and King Mackerel to Snapper.
November

The start of November may be your last chance to board a deep sea fishing charters for the year. Head offshore and catch large bottom fish or troll for a prize worth bragging about. The backwaters are promising, as always.

December
It’s the holidays and Marco Island fishing is the gift that keeps on giving! Bring home a fresh catch from the backwaters or nearshore reefs and impress your guests with a scrumptious dinner.
