Fishing in Nokomis

“No shirt, no shoes, Nokomis!” is the unofficial slogan of this small Floridian town, located just a stone’s throw from Sarasota. This perfectly embodies the laid-back, family-friendly vibe you’ll find here! With direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, natural reefs, and shallow bays, Nokomis fishing charters are ready to take you out to some of the most productive spots around. This is the perfect place to experience Floridian fishing at its finest, all without the hustle and bustle of nearby cities.

Explore the Bays and Backwaters

If you’re a newer fisherman, or want an incredible family adventure, Nokomis’s inshore fishing grounds are a must-visit. These flats, bays, and backwaters are calm, productive, and located just minutes from the docks. This means you’ll spend your time fishing, and not traveling!

Explore the waters around the famous North Jetty for Spotted Seatrout, Bull Redfish, Snook, Red and Black Drum, and plenty more. Local bays such as Dona Bay, Lyons Bay, and Curry Creek offer up plenty of action, too. Visit during the winter and spring, when the weather is cooler, as the fish tend to seek out deeper waters when the temperature rises.

For experienced anglers, one fish comes to mind upon hearing the words “Florida” and “inshore fishing” – Tarpon! With direct access to the Boca Grande pass, Nokomis is the perfect location to hook your very own “Silver King.” Tarpon season runs from April–June, so bring plenty of sunscreen along with your fighting spirit.

Navigate Deeper Waters

If you’re looking to hook some tasty table fare, or want to test your skills against seriously huge fish, get ready to head out onto the Gulf!

State-licensed charters will take you up to 9 miles from the shore, over Nokomis’s reefs. Here, you’ll find bottom-dwelling Red and Black Grouper, King Mackerel, Cobia, Amberjack, and one of Florida’s most famous reef-fish, Red Snapper. This species is a popular catch and is strictly regulated, so make sure you check availability with your captain when booking.

Want to come up against some hard-fighting big game fish? Make sure you opt for a federally-licensed charter, as this will allow you to travel over 50 miles out to seriously deep waters. Here, you’ll have the chance to battle Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna species, and Sailfish.

What to Bring

Most Nokomis fishing charters will make sure you have everything you need for a productive day on the water. This includes rods, reels, bait, tackle, and a fishing license for all guests.

Bring along:
  • Snacks and drinks. Ice and water are usually provided.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing. If you’re visiting during summer, sunscreen and a sun hat are a must!
  • Sea-sickness medication. Inshore waters are relatively calm, but fishing grounds around the reefs and further ashore can get choppy.

“No shirt, no shoes, Nokomis!” might be this laid-black Floridian beach town’s unofficial slogan, but its top-notch fishing opportunities are definitely causing a commotion. Come discover it for yourself!

Nokomis Fishing Seasons

Temperatures may be cool, but inshore fishing really heats up in the winter months here, and January is no exception! The flats are full of Snook, Redfish, and Spotted Seatrout.

Inshore fishing remains strong, with trophy-sized Redfish and Snook lurking around the North Jetty. Amberjacks start patrolling the wrecks and reefs, with Grouper species on offer, too.

March starts with a “Wahoo!” – this hard-fighting fish can be found offshore, and Blackfin Tuna are starting to show up, too. Inshore, Redfish and Spotted Seatrout are staying strong.

Here comes “Silver King” season! Anglers who want to earn serious bragging rights should grab their spinning gear and head to the flats to do battle with Florida’s famous Tarpon.

Seasoned anglers recommend sticking to nearshore and offshore waters as the weather heats up – luckily, there are plenty of first-class fish on offer, including Amberjack, Cobia, Tuna species, and Sailfish.

It’s officially Red Snapper season! Huge variations of this species can be found lurking around the local reefs, along with Yellowtail and Mutton Snapper. Further offshore, Tuna species and Sailfish are waiting for you.

Summer is at its peak, and so is the fishing on offer! Offshore, hook Sailfish, huge Tuna, and Mahi Mahi. The reefs are abundant with Snapper species, Amberjack, and Cobia, while Tarpon and Snook inhabit the flats.

Take advantage of summer vacation, and introduce your kids to fishing the Nokomis way! Tarpon and Snook inhabit the bays and flats, and fun-to-catch species such as Cobia and Barracuda can be found nearshore.

Nokomis’s inshore waters boast plenty of hard-fighting Snook year-round, but September is the month to visit if you want to battle and keep this Floridian favorite!

Snook fishing stays strong, with trophy-sized varieties inhabiting the flats and bays. Reef fishing offers up plenty of action, too, with Kingfish, Cobia, and Snapper species all up for grabs.

The weather starts cooling down, but Nokomis is home to year-round fishing opportunities, and November offers up awesome inshore angling! Redfish, Tarpon, Snook, Black Drum, and plenty more can be found.

Give yourself the Christmas gift of a lifetime, and head to Nokomis for world-class offshore fishing! Around the reefs, huge Snapper and Grouper prevail, and you may even have the chance to battle Sailfish out on the Gulf.
