Fishing in Tybee Island

Planning an outdoor vacation in the Peach State? With the best access to the ocean anywhere in Georgia, Tybee Island fishing charters offer all kinds of angling adventures. Whether you're looking to do some fly fishing or fill the cooler on the reefs, it's all possible along this part of the East Coast.

For anglers eager to get in on the local inshore action, there are dozens of creeks close to the island that you can explore. These serve as hunting grounds for Sharks, Redfish, Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Sheepshead. During summer, you can even catch Tarpon close to shore.

If you head into the ocean and hit the reefs instead, you'll find an even greater assembly of fish. Bull Reds, Black Seabass, Cobia, Grouper, Red Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel are just some of what you could encounter. Also, as you reach the distant offshore waters, you'll start seeing pelagics such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, King Mackerel, and even Tuna.

You'll find charter captains in Tybee Island Marina, on Lazaretto Creek, as well as in nearby Savannah. Half days will usually give you enough time to explore the inshore fishing grounds or some local reefs. If you plan on going further offshore, it's recommended to book a full day trip.

Rules & Regulations

Generally, you'll need to buy a Georgia fishing license before you can start fishing. This applies to anglers aged 16 or older. Aboard charter boats, the captain will often sort out the licenses for you. It's also a good idea to get familiar with fish size and bag limits, though your guide will keep you in the loop regarding those.

Tybee Island Fishing Seasons

January

If you'd like to explore the inshore waters around Tybee Island, winter is a great time to do so.  You'll come across the likes of Redfish, Sheepshead, and Flounder. Deep in the creeks, you'll often see Spotted Seatrout bite.

February

The fishing conditions remain largely the same as in January. You can expect to catch Trout, Redfish, and Flounder near creek mouths, jetties, and pilings. If you hit the local reefs, you're likely to hook into some Sheepshead.

March

March marks the opening of the Cobia season. While it's still not yet the best time to go for these fish, if you run into them, you're welcome to try and catch them. On the jetties, you'll get to reel in Redfish, Sheepshead, and Black Drum.

April

As the waters heat up, more and more species will start showing up around the island. Whiting in particular often arrive in good numbers and you can catch them both from a boat and in the surf. Of course, other inshore favorites are also swimming about.

May

May is one of the best times to chase after Cobia. These fish can grow big and fight hard. They're also fairly unpredictable, so finding them is always a special treat. Or, you can do some trolling for Spanish and King Mackerel.

June

By now, the season is in full swing. Inshore, you'll get to fish for the mighty Tarpon. If you go offshore instead, you'll find Black Seabass, Grouper, and Amberjack on the reefs, as well as some pelagics that are prowling about.

July

The federal Red Snapper season normally opens up in July, marking the time to hit the ocean waters and reel in some big ones. Out there, you'll also find Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, and even a rare Sailfish.

August

With the Tarpon action still at its peak inshore, August is a fantastic month to learn the meaning of the phrase "Bow to the King." Offshore, you'll get a chance to reel in different game fish including Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, King Mackerel, and more.

September

The summer may be coming to an end but September marks the start of Bull Redfish season. So if you're itching to catch a trophy-sized Red, consider visiting during fall.

October

October is when the "Big Bully" Redfish Tournament takes place on Tybee Island. It's also the last month when you'll get to catch Cobia before their season opens again in spring.

November

Redfish fishing is still as good as ever. However, you'll also get to reel in Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Flounder, and other inshore fish. With mild temperatures, this is a great time to visit Tybee Island.

December

The year may be coming to a close but the fishing is still going strong. With the waters cooling down, Speckled Trout will be moving deeper into the creeks. You can also sight fish for Redfish, although they're a little easier to spook in the clearer waters.
