Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Charters in Lafitte

Fishing in Lafitte

Louisiana is home to nearly 40% of the US’s wetlands, and Lafitte lies at the heart of them. Located in Jefferson Parish, this southern beauty offers unlimited access to acres of lakes, rivers, swamps, marshes, and barrier islands. Yet, navigating these waters requires local expertise. There are plenty of Lafitte fishing charters to show you around.

Lafitte’s inland waters are teeming with life. Within minutes of launching, you could land a local favorite – Redfish. Followed by Black Drum, these two species rule the waters. The good news for Flounder fans is that this fish isn’t lagging behind. And kids will be thrilled to encounter Sheepshead, while more serious anglers will brag about reeling in Bass and Trout.

To get the most out of your fishing experience in Lafitte, aim for the longer trips. The most popular option to experience the backcountry is an 8-hour trip and charter operators are well-equipped to welcome your entire family. For more adventurous anglers, there’s nothing like night fishing and bowfishing for an adrenaline rush.

Lafitte’s economy is all about fishing, so it comes as no surprise that almost every corner of this location features prime fishing charters. They’ll show you less-known marsh spots in search of the prolific Red Drum fisheries and give you tips on how to fish anywhere between Lake Salvador and Mud Lake.

Rules & Regulations

When planning your Lafitte fishing trip, make sure to include buying a fishing license on your list. Both residents and visitors to Louisiana state need a fishing license if they’re 16 or older. Depending on what areas you’ll explore aboard the charter, you’ll either need the basic license that covers inland fishing, or the Saltwater one for coastal angling.

Lafitte Fishing Seasons

January

Not sure how to spend some quality time with your family? Why don’t you start off with fishing in Lafitte for Black Drum and Redfish? You can experience firsthand why they’re local favorites.

February

While it’s possible to catch Bass and Trout in February, you’ll probably want to focus more on Drum. Red and Black varieties are traveling through these brackish waters in abundance and they’re ready to put up a good fight before they make room for other species.

March

The season of suspense and anticipation has started. While Lafitte fishing is a year-round sport, early spring brings the most excitement. This is when Bass and Drum are here along with Flounder and Sheepshead.

April

This is probably the last chance to go after big Largemouth Bass. They’ll be around throughout summer, but spring and fall are the most prolific in terms of targeting them.

May

When the shrimp start coming out of the marshes, Trout will follow. They can’t resist live bait, and brown shrimp are a real treat. Spring marks the beginning of the Trout's pursuit and for the next couple of months, it will be sublime.

June

Tropical temperatures bring new faces and for a short period of time, you can try your luck with Jack Crevalle and Tripletail. While they’re present throughout the entire year in this area, hot weather is when they reach their peak.

July

Can’t decide what to target? You’re not alone! Lafitte's backcountry fishing is exploding with choices. And if you were to choose only one fish to target, let it be Flounder. This is the best time to try bowfishing and avoid the blazing sun with a night fishing trip.

August

Summer can be insanely hot in Louisiana so make sure you think ahead and pack accordingly. But when it comes to fish, you don't have to worry about them not biting. Lafitte is brimming with Tripletail, Jack Crevalle, Sheepshead, Drum, and Trout.

September

During the fall months, Lafitte quickly transforms into a Trout playground. They’ve been going strong for a couple of months, but fall is when Speckled Trout and Spotted Seatrout are at their best.

October

Inland waters are brimming with species due to the weather changes. With the scorching heat behind us, fish are easier to catch and you can expect to reel in anything from Redfish, Black Drum, Largemouth Bass, and Flounder to Speckled Trout.

November

Fall doesn’t lack variety when it comes to species you can catch. From Bass to Trout to Drum, you’ll be spoilt for choice. And with the humidity levels slowly decreasing, this might be the ideal time of the year for you to spend it outdoors fishing with your family.

December

While Reds can be targeted year-round, the cold front brings the giants you don’t want to miss. The more impressive catches will be in deeper waters, while the smaller specimens will cruise the shallows and grassy flats.
