Fishing in Boston

Boston will dazzle you with its unique charm, sprawling parks, and delicious food. However, if you're a dedicated fisherman, then you should know all about the city's fantastic fishing potential. Because these waters have so much to offer, the best way to navigate the scene is with the help of a Boston fishing charter.

There are a lot of species you can target – it all comes down to what you like. Some fish, like Flounder, Tautog, and Halibut are available all year. Still, the best time to cast a line is in spring and summer because Striped Bass, Bonito, Bluefish, Haddock, Pollock, and coveted Cod come out to play.

But the crowning jewel of Boston’s fishery is Bluefin Tuna that arrives in June. These fish are the most prized catches of all, and they congregate around the banks and ledges in the bluewater. They can weigh hundreds of pounds and are terrific fighters, not to mention that they're the best-tasting fish out there. Shark fishing in the deep waters is also top-notch.

With such a variety of fish, it's no wonder Boston fishing charters are so good at what they do. They've got a lot of trips on offer, from half day voyages for Stripers and Bluefish to extended full day expeditions that will put you on Bluefin Tuna, Sharks, and more.

There are different marinas where you can find your perfect charter boat, including Constitution Marina, Rowes Wharf, and Boston Waterboat Marina.

Rules & Regulations

If you're going out with a Boston charter guide, you don't have to worry about a fishing license – they come covered in your trip price. Your crew will make sure you only keep fish that are in season and within limits, but it's a good idea to check out the latest rules and regulations so that you're fully prepared.

Boston Fishing Seasons

January

January is a great time for Flounder fishing in Boston, with Tautog and Halibut also willing to bite. If you want to embrace the cold, the annual L Street Brownies swim could be great fun, if you don't mind the freezing water.

February

The bitter cold isn't giving up just yet, but that shouldn't discourage you. If you catch a nice clear day, head out to target Pollock, Haddock, and Halibut, or stay in the harbor to fish for Flounder.

March

The winter Flounder bite calms down in March, but there are much bigger Flatfish offshore. Target Halibut on a full day trip and you'll also reel in some tasty Haddock and Pollock. Better empty the freezer!

April

Spring is here, and that means that it's only a matter of days before the first Stripers start showing up around Boston Harbor. The Tautog bite is still going strong, and a few miles from shore, Haddock isn't bad either.

May

May kicks off the summer fishing season with spring Stripers swarming the shallows and big Bluefish in the bay. Fluke are also in season and make for some of the best eating around. The fishing is getting better with each passing day.

June

The offshore action finally gets going with the arrival of the first Bluefin Tuna. Stellwagen Bank is at its best in early summer, before the waters get too warm. When you're not battling Tuna, test your strength against Sharks and big bottom fish.

July

This is one of the best months to get a taste of prime Boston fishing! July is a great time for Shark and Tuna fishing, and inshore, the bays are full of Cow Stripers. Local Fourth of July celebrations are incredible, too.

August

Whatever you'd like to target and catch, you should try it in August! The weather is hot and so is the action, with Stripers, Bluefish, Tautog, and Mackerel biting left and right inshore, and Tuna, Sharks, Haddock, Pollock, and more on the menu offshore.

September

Pretty much every major species is still out and about in September. Sharks, Tuna, Stripers, Bluefish, Fluke, Tautog – the hardest part will be choosing what to target! And whatever you choose, chances are you won't be disappointed.

October

The fall is in full swing, and fishing remains excellent. Bear in mind that species like Black Seabass and Haddock might have closed seasons in October, but bottom fish, Stripers, Tuna, and Sharks are still biting offshore.

November

Big game dreams have to be put on hold as the bluewater bite drops off. There's still great food fishing, though, with winter Flounder, Pollock, Haddock, and Halibut available year-round.

December

The cold winds from the ocean bring choppy waters and offshore fishing comes to a stop in December. From shore, you can get your hands on flatties like Fluke and Halibut, as well as some Tautog.
