Fishing in Bay City

The Great Lake State is brimming with fishing potential, as its name suggests. If you're looking for an angling destination in Michigan that can give you a taste of its amazing fisheries, Bay City is the place for you. You've got the Saginaw River, Saginaw Bay, and Lake Huron at your disposal, and plenty of Bay City fishing charters to take you to the best bite.

Any freshwater game fish you can think of call these waters home, all you have to do is figure out the best time and place to target them. This is where your guides can help, of course. Walleye are by far the most popular catch, closely followed by Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, and Panfish. You can also find good numbers of Bass and Freshwater Drum (locally called Sheepshead).

Then you've got your Chinook and Coho Salmon in the summer, and let's not forget about Rainbow and Brown Trout. You can also hook into big Lake Trout here, especially if you cast your lines in the deeper sections of Lake Huron.

Your fishing exploration will be most successful if you let experienced charter captains lead the way. Trips can last as little as 3 hours, enough to get a feel of what's going on, but they go up to 7 hours, where you can explore the open waters of Lake Huron.

Bay City fishing charters usually dock at the Bay Harbor Marina on the Saginaw River, and this is where you'll meet them. There are also some guides who are located upstream from the marina.

Rules & Regulations

Before you hop on board, you'll need a valid Michigan fishing license. Even if you're going out with a charter, it's up to you to get a license before you start fishing.

Bay City Fishing Seasons

January

This is the prime time to go ice fishing on Saginaw Bay. The ice is usually safe by mid-January, just expect that there will be a lot of people on it. Walleye, Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, and Lake Trout are all possible catches.

February

Hard-water fishing is still going strong so, whenever the day is clear and the cold is bearable, grab your ice fishing gear and head out. Your persistence will be rewarded with some delicious Walleye and Yellow Perch.

March

At the beginning of the month, ice fishing might still be good, but be extra careful of dangerously thin ice. As the days become warmer, take a breather and prepare for top-notch spring fishing.

April

In April, Walleye prepare for spawning, so they'll be traveling up the Saginaw River as the staging season starts. The bite can be very good this time of year because Wallies are hungry, and the mouth of the river is a great place to target them.

May

There are more and more fish in Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron with each passing day. This is when you'll find the first Chinook and Coho Salmon in the lake. Trout action is getting good, and Walleye are coming back from spawning and they're hungry.

June

The high fishing season begins! Bay City fishing charters get busy in June because there's so much to target on all three watersheds. Big Walleye, plenty of Yellow Perch close to shore, Salmon, Trout, and Northern Pike are all there for the taking.

July

Salmon fishing is at its best in July and August. You can find some big Chinook out there and Coho and Pink Salmon are going strong as well. Lake Trout and Walleye are always an option, as are Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.

August

Fishing is off the hook! If you can choose one month to visit Bay City, August is probably your best choice. The weather is fair, the fish are biting, and summer in the city is always fun. Salmon, Walleye, Pike, Bass – all the game fish are attacking with wild abandon.

September

Chinook, Coho, and Pink Salmon are slowly but surely leaving the bay and the lake, and this is your last chance to go after them. Rainbow and Lake Trout are still out there, and Walleye and Perch offer a lot of excitement to anglers of all levels.

October

It's getting colder on the water and rainy in Bay City, but that doesn't mean that the fun has to stop. Walleye are still active and voracious, Lakers and 'Bows follow close behind, and there's good Pike and Perch to catch as well.

November

While you can still get good numbers of Walleye, Perch, and Trout, you'll need the weather to work in your favor, which won't always be the case in November. Make sure you bundle up and be extra careful if you decide to hit the water.

December

Winter is coming, but the ice on Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron usually isn't strong enough for ice fishing in December. Take this time to recharge, enjoy the holidays, and get ready for another season of fantastic ice fishing in the upcoming months.
