Fishing in Grand Haven

Grand Haven fishing charters have plenty to offer. This city is located on Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline at the mouth of the Grand River, which means you have two excellent freshwater fisheries at your disposal. They’re accessible from the city itself and, to add to the excitement, both the river and the lake are bustling with world-famous fish!

Grand Haven’s fishing season tends to kick off in April, when Lake Michigan’s charter captains start to head out on the water. Huge Chinook Salmon can be hooked during this time, and are joined by Brown Trout and Steelhead later in spring. Come summer, you’ll also be able to target Lake Trout and Coho Salmon. The most popular fishing technique on the lake is trolling, with charter captains offering trips ranging from a few hours to full day trophy-chasing excursions.

The Grand River also boasts a healthy population of freshwater superstars. In fall, Salmon varieties head to the river mouth to spawn, and are joined by a good number of Steelhead. This is a great time to target huge Chinook! You’ll also be able to hook Trout, Catfish, and Walleye year-round. Similarly to Lake Michigan, most charter captains offer trips that last anywhere from a few hours on the water to full day adventures.

As Grand Haven is a port, you’ll be able to find fishing charters dotted all around the lakefront and the mouth of the Grand River. Both lake and river fishing trips are on offer, but make sure you let your captain know which area you’re interested in fishing.

Rules & Regulations

Grand Haven Fishing Seasons

January

If you feel like digging a hole in the ice and seeing what’s biting, make sure you consult a local guide. It’s only safe to go ice fishing with someone who has the right equipment and knows these waters well!

February

The winter is almost over, and if you absolutely can’t wait to wet a line, why not check out the Grand River? You have the opportunity to ice fish, so just make sure you head out with a local guide.

March

Before stopping at the Sixth Street Dam, Steelhead run upstream. The run peaks in late March. Bring spinners and bright flies for bite after bite when fishing the Grand River!

April

The water is pretty cold this time of year, but you can test your angling skills and try your luck in the Grand River. You could find anything from Trout, to Catfish, to Walleye biting.

May

It’s May, which means one thing. Chinook Salmon have arrived in Lake Michigan! Search for your Kings in shallow waters. And don’t forget about Brown Trout and Steellies, either.

June

Summer has well and truly arrived, which means Lake Michigan’s waters are warming up. Lake Trout, Steelhead, and Chinook Salmon dominate this fishery, and provide plenty of excitement at the end of your line.

July

The end of July sees hundreds of tourists and locals enjoying the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. This month also keeps anglers busy with big King Salmon, Steelhead, and Lake Trout.

August

Late August is all about battling various types of Salmon and Trout on Lake Michigan. You can also head to the Grand River for Smallmouth Bass and target 'em with lures, jigs, and flies.

September

Chinook Salmon begin to gather at the Grand River’s mouth, ready to run upstream. The Grand Haven Salmon Festival ialso takes place during this month.

October

In October, Steelhead can be found around 5 to 15 miles from shore. If you decide to check out the bite, you can also find young Salmon to add to your list of potential catches.

November

Winter is around the corner and the weather's usually pretty cold right now. Check the tributaries for whatever might be biting there! You could find Walleye and Trout at the end of your line.

December

Even though this month is clearly all about Christmas and spending time with your family, ice fishing is a great way to add to the festivities. If the weather cooperates and the lake is frozen, head out with a local guide.
