Fishing in Galveston

Galveston, Texas, stands as a premier fishing destination renowned for its exceptional diversity across inshore bay systems, nearshore waters, and deep-sea Gulf environments. Anglers of every skill level find year-round opportunities here, with Galveston fishing charters offering tailored experiences from tranquil bay excursions to thrilling offshore adventures.

The nutrient-rich Galveston Bay ecosystem yields prized inshore species like Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder, alongside Black Drum and Sheepshead. These waters accommodate all techniques – from light-tackle lure fishing to nocturnal flounder gigging, a unique Texas tradition. Just beyond the jetties, nearshore charters target migratory Tarpon, Bull Reds, and various Shark species, delivering exhilarating battles minutes from shore.

For deep-sea enthusiasts, Galveston’s offshore grounds host seasonal spectacles like summer Red Snapper runs and year-round encounters with Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, and Amberjack. Extended voyages reach oil rigs and marine sanctuaries where Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Marlin patrol deep blue waters. This unparalleled variety, paired with professional charters operating well-equipped vessels, cements Galveston’s status as a world-class angling hub where every trip promises memorable catches.

Galveston Fishing Seasons

January

Weather can be cold, windy, and wet. But in between showers you will enjoy catching Sheepshead and Drum near the jetties and large Redfish and Drum in deeper water.

February

February sees foggy mornings and large Redfish and Trout being caught over deeper ledges. Drum and Sheepshead are caught near the jetties and make for some great eating.

March

Water temperatures increase and the fishing heats up just in time for Spring Break. It can be windy, but the back lakes and marshes provide protected waters full of smaller Redfish.

April

Speckled Trout and Redfish increase as the water heats up, with Sheepshead still a good catch and a good meal. Shark fishing gets exciting and Bull Reds and huge Black Drum appear.

May

Enjoy 80-degree temperatures and sunny skies. Trout and Redfish fishing is good, and you can also catch Bull, Hammerhead, Black Tip, Spinner, Sand Bar, and many more Sharks.

June

Red Snapper season opens in Galveston! You can also try night time Flounder gigging for something different, or trolling nearshore for Kingfish, Cobia, and more.

July

Limiting out on Speckled Trout, heading offshore for Red Snapper, exploring the Gulf for Cobia and Mahi Mahi, and gigging for Flounder and Drum… July in Galveston has it all.

August

Warmer temperatures see bay fish head into deeper water. At the same time, Kingfish come closer to shore for some line-screaming action. Flounder gigging is heating up.

September

Daylight hours shorten and temperatures start to drop. Bull Redfish start to come into the bay in huge numbers to spawn, with 30-40 fish being caught in a day sometimes!

October

Bull Redfish and Trout are spawning, leading to incredible numbers of fish being caught in and near the bay. Flounder gigging is at its best - these trips book up fast in October.

November

Flounder gigging season closes. Weather conditions become unpredictable, but Speckled Trout and Redfish are plentiful in the back lakes and marshes.

December

Flounder gigging season reopens and this is the best time to catch a GIANT. You can also fish the back lakes and marshes for Speckled Trout and Redfish.
