Fishing in Port Mansfield

If you’re looking to escape the crowds and spend the day relaxing in nature, visit the small town of Port Mansfield. While the town is small, the fish here get big, which you can witness by joining a Port Mansfield fishing guide. With access to the crystal clear waters of Laguna Madre, and just a short boat ride away from the Gulf of Mexico, this is one of the most prolific fishing towns in this part of the country.

For such a small town, Port Mansfield is blessed with amazing natural resources. If you cast a line inshore, you’ll hook species like Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead. Heading offshore to the deep waters of the Gulf will yield some great results – big Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish, Amberjack, Snapper, Grouper, and Mahi Mahi.

Are you on vacation with your family? Booking a half day trip is the best way to explore the area. You’ll be able to spend some time together, but the kids won’t get restless. If you’re looking for more serious angling to fill your bags, or if it’s the offshore beasts you’re after, consider booking a full day trip. Specialized trips like Flounder gigging are always a lot of fun!

Once you’ve decided on what kind of adventure you’re looking to experience, it’s time to hop on a charter! Luckily, since Port Mansfield is so small, all you need to do is head on down to the docks and take your pick. Arroyo City and Port Isabel have a wide array of charters to offer as well.

Rules & Regulations

When it comes to fishing regulations, you’ll need to abide by Texas state laws. This means that everyone age 17 or over is required to have a Texas fishing license, regardless of whether they’re fishing on their own or on a fishing charter.

Port Mansfield Fishing Seasons

January

Nothing beats sight casting for Redfish in clear shallow waters. You’ll need to be extra careful not to spook them, but you’ll be rewarded if you manage it.

February

February is a good time to fish for Black Drum. The best way to do it is to go past Redfish Bay and into the upper reaches of Laguna Madre.

March

As winter draws to a close, expect to see fewer Redfish inshore. The Trout bite remains strong, and you can also look forward to the occasional Flounder.

April

You can still catch Redfish down in the grassy flats. If you’d like to turn it up a notch, you’ll be able to go after Marlin in the offshore waters as the month ends.

May

A large number of Tarpon appear within the first days of May. Not only that, but the Tuna bite offshore is getting better by the week.

June

Summer is here, and so is federal Red Snapper season. This bottom feeder is bound to be on top of every angler’s list for the time being.

July

There’s so much to do in Port Mansfield now that you’ll be spoiled for choice. How does offshore fishing for Tuna, Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, and others sound?

August

Deep sea fishing is going strong in August as well, get it while it’s hot! Otherwise, you can also go after some inshore fish in the local bay.

September

This time of year is a good time to do some Flounder fishing if you’re up for it. The best way to do so is to look for them close to the flats to the south of town.

October

If you think things slow down in October, you couldn’t be more wrong! In fact, it’s a great time for just about any kind of fishing, both inshore and offshore.

November

When the waters cool down, you get some great opportunities for fly fishing. The Tuna bite is also hot, so feel free to try different things.

December

Clear waters make for awesome fishing inshore. You’ll be knee-deep in Redfish, Black Drum, and Trout throughout Laguna Madre.
