The new year in Puerto Plata starts with a bang as far as fishing is concerned. Swordfishing is on fire and will be for the next couple of months. In fact, just about anything is biting right now, including Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Barracuda.

The Dominican Republic celebrates its Independence Day on February 27. After you’re done fishing for Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, or Sailfish, be sure to join in on the fun, especially for the Carnival.

In March, White Marlin fishing really goes into overdrive. You can find them all over the shoreline, so you can get a lot done even on a short trip. Swordfishing is still on fire!

The White Marlin craze continues, with double-digit releases being the norm. Going further off in search of Blackfin Tuna is also an option for ambitious anglers, and if you like staying closer to shore, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, and Snapper are always hungry.

Things tend to calm down a bit this time of year as people are waiting for the Marlin season to hit. The fish are not sleeping though, and going after bottom feeders like Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda on the reefs is a good idea.

Prepare to see a lot of anglers heading off to the FADs for the next couple of months. Blue Marlin are about to come in force and, if you’d like to get some practice, target White Marlin a few miles from the shore.

Get ready for really hot days on the water during September – but don’t sweat it! The abundance of fish will be worth the effort. Put some sunscreen on and hit the waves in search of majestic Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, or Snapper and Barracuda.

Everything must come to an end sooner or later, and that includes the Blue Marlin season. On the bright side, the Sailfish bite is picking up, and there are pelagics galore for your pleasure, so the fun never ends.

This is a good time of year to do some fly fishing for Bonefish and maybe even some Snook. Alternatively, head offshore for some awesome Wahoo, Sailfish, and Mahi Mahi action, and enjoy!

December is probably the best time to go Sailfishing in Puerto Plata. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better way to end the year as an angler. Want a bit of variety? Anything from Mahi Mahi and Bonito to Snapper and Wahoo is biting this month.
