Fishing in Indian River Lagoon

Florida’s east coast is known for its untouched scenery and diverse wildlife, and the mighty Indian River Lagoon System is a big reason why. Made up of the Indian and Banana Rivers, as well as the Mosquito Lagoon, this waterway is packed full of grassy flats, mangrove forests, salt marshes, and oyster beds. It’s also brimming with some of the Sunshine State’s most beloved species. What better way to lose yourself in nature than on an Indian River Lagoon fishing trip?

With an average depth of around four feet, the Indian River Lagoon is all about inshore game fishing. Mosquito Lagoon is even known as the “Redfish Capital of the World,” as this species inhabits these waters year-round. Then there’s the “Silver King” (Tarpon), as well as Spotted Seatrout, Snook, Jack Crevalle, Pompano, and Sheepshead. Newer anglers can practise their casting skills, whereas the more ambitious of you can see what’s biting on the fly!

The Indian River Lagoon System has made a name for itself as a fishing hotspot, which means you’ll find plenty of guides dotted along its banks. There’s a whole host of trips to choose from, with shorter, four-hour options providing the perfect introduction for newbies and families. Want to spend more time on the water? You’ll find plenty of full day trips, too.

Although it’s common to find charters docked all along the river, the most popular departure points are around the nearby cities, such as New Smyrna Beach, Vero Beach, and Port Canaveral. Hop aboard your chosen vessel, and you’ll be fishing within minutes!
