Fishing in Kure Beach

The Kure Beach fishing scene is a fantastic combination of different angling opportunities, all available in one welcoming coastal town. Come here to enjoy the superb river fishing, cast your line off the legendary Kure Beach Pier, or head to the offshore waters to target a slew of game fish.

The town offers access to the mouth of the Cape Fear River and its productive backwaters, where you can go after Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Cobia, and Flounder.

The shores of the Tar Heel State are known for their offshore and bottom fishing. This means you can easily find guides in Kure Beach that will take you to the diverse world of offshore fishing. Bull Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Wahoo, Tuna, Marlin, and Sailfish are all on the to-catch list.

When booking a fishing charter in Kure Beach, the only limit to choosing your trip is your imagination. Half day excursions are excellent for exploring the inshore bite, while longer expeditions will take you to the offshore realm.

Competitive anglers will also have a lot of fun here – there’s a variety of tournaments that take place in the summer. The “Annual East Coast Got Em On King Mackerel Classic” in July and the “Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman Fishing Tournament” in May are popular ones.

Most guides will meet you at the Kure Beach Pier. If you’re going backwater fishing, your captain will give you detailed directions to the departure point. One of the many upsides to fishing with an experienced charter captain is that all the gear and fishing licenses are included in the price.

Wherever you decide to go in the area, you’ll fall in love with the fishing in Kure Beach!

Kure Beach Fishing Seasons

January
Winter fishing in Kure Beach is more productive than most anglers know. Even though the ocean can be fickle, backwater fishing for Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Black Drum is going strong.
February

Bull Redfish are loving February, and this is a great time to hit the water and see if you can catch your next record. Black Drum also prefer colder waters, and Speckled Trout won’t shy away from the right setup either.

March

The temperatures are rising and so is the excitement. Flounder are becoming active around the mouth of the river, and on the piers, the Bluefish and Whiting bite is getting better and better.

April
Springtime brings good fishing on all fronts. Whether it’s Redfish or Trout in the river, Flounder or Bluefish around the pier, or Mackerel and Mahi Mahi in the offshore waters, there’s solid action all around.
May

If you’d like to prowl the waters of the Gulf Stream, May is one of the best months to do it. You’ll need to book a full day expedition to get to the playground of Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish, and Wahoo, but the trip will be well worth it.

June

Inshore fishing is excellent, offshore fishing is even better, and Cape Fear River is as productive as ever! Whatever you decide to target in June, chances are, you’re going to be successful.

July

Enjoy the heat of the summer while casting your line from the Kure Beach Pier, where you could hook a wide array of brag-worthy fish. King Mackerel, Sheepshead, and Redfish are biting, and for the ultimate fight, target Tarpon and Sharks.

August

You can hit the offshore waters and do some bottom fishing for Grouper and Black Seabass, or hit the surf to entice Bluefish, Black Drum, and Whiting. If you don’t know what to choose, stay a couple of days and do both!

September

It’s no secret that fishing around Kure Beach in the summer is phenomenal, but fall action is just as good. Redfish and Speckled Trout are hungry in the backwaters, as well as Flounder and King Mackerel swimming close to shore.

October

As the weather cools down, Black Drum come out to play. Speckled Trout fishing, though spotty in the summer, is picking up in October, and Redfish are big, active, and hungry.

November

Pier fishing is excellent in November! There’s a good variety of species that you could catch – Flounder, Redfish, Bluefish, as well as Speckled Trout and rare Striped Bass.

December

Redfish and Speckled Trout are the stars of the show in December. If the weather serves you, there are plenty of these good-sized fish swimming around, so get your fill of fishing thrills just before the holidays.
