Fishing in Calcasieu Lake

A Lake Calcasieu fishing experience is unique and diverse. It’s connected to the Gulf of Mexico by a 5.5-mile-long stream, providing easy access to offshore fishing grounds. If you’re a newcomer, choose a fishing guide that knows the area well and get ready to explore Bayou Country!

When it comes to fishing in brackish water, “Big Lake” has been a top choice for Gulf Coast anglers for many decades, thanks to the species on offer. This lake is famous for its excellent Red and Black Drum fisheries, as well as Speckled Trout and Flounder. Other target species include Sheepshead, Cobia, and Tripletail.

Fishing guides in the area provide both half day and full day trips. Half days will see you fishing anywhere from 4–5 hours and are perfect for novice fishermen and families with kids. Longer trips are designed to cover more fishing grounds and locate a greater range of species, especially trophy-sized Trout. These trips are perfect for experienced anglers or those looking to spend more hours on the water.

A couple of towns in the area offer excellent guide services, such as Lake Charles and Hackberry. You can approach some great spots from both locations. Places such as Devils Elbow, Black Lake Bayou, and Turner Bay Reef provide great action for anglers of all skill levels. All you have to do is pick a local guide, find your favorite spot, and fill that bucket up with some delicious fish!

Rules & Regulations

All residents and non-residents over the age of 16 must have a valid fishing license. Since Lake Calcasieu is a brackish body of water, you’ll need to purchase both a basic and saltwater license. Residents joining a licensed saltwater skiff charter are covered. If you’re a non-resident, you’ll still have to pay for a 3-Day Skiff Charter License. All freshwater guides require you to buy a basic fishing license before your trip.
