Fishing in Narragansett Bay

Experience the thrill of Narragansett Bay, a premier East Coast destination celebrated for its year-round fishing adventures. Spanning 26 miles of Rhode Island coastline, these fertile waters host diverse species across distinct seasons, offering anglers unmatched variety. From spring through fall, inshore hotspots yield trophy striped bass, aggressive bluefish, and hard-fighting tautog, while summer brings fluke, black sea bass, and scup to nearshore reefs.

Venture beyond the bay for offshore encounters with bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, and acrobatic mahi-mahi during peak summer months. Expert local captains tailor trips to your preferences, employing techniques like topwater action, precision trolling, and live-bait fishing. Family-friendly charters explore sheltered coves, while seasoned anglers chase pelagic giants in deeper Atlantic waters.

The bay's dynamic ecosystem ensures consistent action: Migratory striped bass surge through spring and fall, bottom feeders like tautog dominate rocky structures, and summer flounder patrol sandy flats. With charters launching from Warwick, Narragansett, and South Kingstown, every expedition blends proven expertise with the raw beauty of New England's marine wilderness. Discover why Narragansett Bay remains a top-tier destination where every cast promises new excitement.

Narragansett Bay Fishing Seasons

January

The beginning of the year isn’t a good time to go fishing in the bay. It will probably be freezing on the water, and you won’t be allowed to target most of the species. Better to wait for warmer weather!

February

The waters are still not too friendly for fishermen, which is why locals don’t usually go fishing in Narragansett Bay in February. Maybe, if the day is unusually warm, there might be some Cod action.

March

It’s slowly getting warmer in Rhode Island, but the waters can still get quite choppy, and the wind chills are strong. Flounder season is officially open, and you can find good numbers of Cod out there.

April

Tautog season opens this month, the weather is improving every day, and that means a lot of fishing fights in your near future. Bottom fishing is very productive in April, and the Bass bite is also good.

May

May marks the beginning of the high fishing season on Narragansett Bay. You’re welcome to hit the water and target just about anything you fancy, including Stripers, Tautog, Bluefish, Cod, and more.

June

With summer right around the corner, you better believe that fishing is excellent on the bay. Catch Bass around rocks and ledges, or go after aggressive Bluefish, Black Seabass, and Fluke. The Tautog season is closed until August.

July

The middle of the summer is probably the best time to fish Narragansett Bay! Bluefishing is at its peak, as well as Bass fishing. Everything else, from Bonito, Cod, and Fluke to Black Seabass is out there for the taking.

August

It’s hot and muggy in the bay, but there’s nothing like some first-class fishing action to freshen you up. Bluefish, Bonito, Little Tunny, and Stripers are biting left and right, with other bottom dwellers following close behind.

September

The summer is slowly ending, the air is crisp, and fishing is fantastic. Bass can sometimes be elusive, but the hunt is worth the effort because there are some giants out there. Bluefishing is top-notch in September as well.

October

The cold front from the Atlantic is cooling down the temperatures and the water, so there’s a shift on the fishing front. Tautog, Cod, and Black Seabass take center stage, with plenty of Bluefish and Stripers still out there.

November

Most of the migratory fish aren’t very fond of cold waters, so they’ll be leaving the bay or simply becoming more apathetic. Thankfully, Black Bass and Tautog are still very hungry, and they’ll show you good times on the waves.

December

With the holiday season fast approaching, you’ll find fewer fish in the bay. It’s getting very cold outside, so going fishing in Narragansett Bay this time of year might not be the best decision. If you just have to scratch that itch, dress warmly and target Tautog and Cod.
