Fishing in Oregon Coast

Looking to experience some seriously diverse fishing opportunities? Hop aboard one of the Beaver State’s many Oregon Coast fishing charters. With 350 miles of Pacific coastline to explore, as well as a whole host of bays, estuaries, rivers, and coastal lakes, there’s no end to the angling possibilities on offer here.

The Oregon Coast provides access to both saltwater and freshwater fisheries, which means you can target a diverse number of fish. The Pacific Ocean, or one of its many bays such as Coos, Tillamook, Nestucca, and Yaquina, could see you hooking into Chinook Salmon, Rockfish, Halibut, Seabass, Tuna, Striped Bass, Lingcod, and even Crab. Depending on the species you’re targeting, you’ll likely be trolling the ocean or bottom fishing for huge, deep sea monsters!

Then there’s the freshwater fishing. The mighty Columbia River winds its way past the Oregon Coast, and is a world-famous Salmon fishing spot. Both Coho and Chinook varieties can be targeted. In the summer, trophy Sturgeon appear. You can also cast a line in smaller rivers, such as the Umpqua, for Cutthroat Trout and Walleye, and Tenmile Lake is known for its incredible Bass fishery. Freshwater trips usually last anywhere from a half day to a full day out on the water.

Picking a departure point along the Oregon Coast depends on where you want to fish and what you want to catch. Astoria is perfect for anglers who want to explore the ocean and bays, and it heats up with Salmon fishers around Buoy 10 in fall. Portland is popular with Columbia River fishers. Charters around Coos Bay provide excellent bottom fishing opportunities. Basically, wherever you want to fish, you’ll find an experienced local guide waiting to take you out!

Rules & Regulations

Any angler age 12+ wanting to explore the Oregon Coast will need a valid Oregon fishing license. If you’re fishing in the Columbia River or its tributaries, you’ll also need a valid Columbia River Basin Endorsement.

Oregon Coast Fishing Seasons

January

January is a great time to explore the Oregon Coast. Just be careful to dodge the winter storms! The rivers promise Sturgeon and Steelhead, while the bays offer excellent bottom fishing for Lingcod and Rockfish.

February

No matter where you find yourself on the Oregon Coast at this time of year, rest assured there’s something to hook into! Try crabbing and bottom fishing in the bays or test the coastal rivers for winter Steelhead.

March

March is a great time to cast a few lines from the jetties for Surfperch, Herring, and large Lingcod. You can still find good crabbing opportunities in Netarts Bay. Elsewhere, Spring Chinook are entering the Columbia River.

April

April is full of possibilities, including the last of the winter Steelhead and the first of the Spring Chinook. Many locals are digging around the beaches and bay flats for Clams. Bottom fishing near shore is top notch.

May

Halibut season is open, offering up some of Oregon's best bottom fishing opportunities. Lingcod and other deep dwellers are biting hard, too. Surf fishing and clamming on the beaches keep you busy on shore.

June

June is an excellent time to hit the Columbia River for big Chinook Salmon and “dinosaur” Sturgeon weighing hundreds of pounds. Halibut are potentially still open to harvest out on the Pacific, too.

July

If regulations allow, July can be a great time to target Coho Salmon offshore as they head toward the Columbia River. Casting lines off the coast may also bring you Halibut or Albacore Tuna.

August

The Buoy 10 Fishery in Astoria has many anglers rushing to the Columbia River for fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead. At the same time, deep sea fishermen are heading 20 to 40 miles offshore for Tuna.

September

There’s plenty to keep you preoccupied in the rivers and bays. Head offshore to catch the last of the Tuna run or get a taste of the region’s Dungeness Crab fishing opportunities.

October

By now, Salmon fishing is largely limited to Oregon’s coastal bays and rivers. You can expect superb crabbing at this time of year. Trophy Sturgeon hunters will be following the fish upstream from Astoria.

November

If the weather and regulations allow, November is a great time to head into the bays for some of the year’s best crabbing and Rockfishing opportunities. There’s also lots of clamming and surf fishing potential on shore.

December

Winter fishing on the coast of Oregon is all about bottom fish, Steelhead, and Sturgeon. For those willing to brave the weather, excellent crabbing awaits offshore.
