Want to cast a line in paradise? Hop aboard one of the many fishing charters in Hawaii. There’s postcard-perfect azure waters and white sandy beaches to explore, as well as some world-famous fish on offer. Hawaii is a known deep sea sportfishing haven, but that’s not where the action ends. With reefs, flats, and freshwater fishing grounds on offer, you can cast off on the adventure of your dreams.

Head out on a deep sea fishing excursion, and you’ll encounter year-round Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Billfish. In some locations, the seafloor drops to a thousand feet just a mile from shore. To get the most out of your adventure, though, a full day trip is a must. More of a reef fishing enthusiast? Plumb underwater structure for local bottom fish including Long-Tail Red Snapper (Onaga) and Short-Tail Red Snapper (Ehu) on a shorter trip.

If you want to spend even less time traveling, explore Hawaii's flats for Bonefish. A half day trip is the perfect introduction to these waters, and you can even try out fly fishing. There’s plenty of inshore action for freshwater fans, too. Largemouth Bass, Peacock Bass, and Channel Catfish can be found in a variety of reservoirs and waterways, with half and full day trips on offer.

There’s an impressive number of departure points dotted all over the Aloha State. Big Island’s Kailua-Kona offers incredible deep sea action, Maui is home to lots of reefs (and spearfishing action!), Kauai has a great Billfish bite as well as an abundance of freshwater fish...the opportunities are endless!

Rules & Regulations

You don’t need a license to fish in Hawaii, unless you’re freshwater fishing. Some species are subject to strict regulations, such as Onaga and Ehu, but your captain will be able to fill you in.

January

Bigeye Tuna make for a delicious feast for offshore anglers in January. Head out and bag one for dinner, then visit the Oahu Fringe Festival to soak up the local arts scene.

February

The Maui Whale Festival gathers 20,000 visitors each year to celebrate these majestic creatures. More into fish than mammals? Shortbill Spearfish and Bigeye Tuna are both on fire.

March

Honolulu Festival manages to combine an all-out party with a genuine display of ethnic and economic solidarity. It’s worth visiting if you can tear yourself away from the Striped Marlin bite.

April

Black and Striped Marlin, Spearfish, Bigeye Tuna, Ono (Wahoo), and Mahi Mahi are all amazing in April. On the other end of the scale, this is one of the best months for Hawaii Bass fishing.

May

Blue Marlin arrive in a big way in May, joining their Black and Striped cousins for a month of incredible Billfishing. Shortbill Spearfish are also around, so you could be in with a Super Grand Slam!

June

The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series starts in style with the Kona Kickoff and the Firecracker Open. Off the water, the Maui Film Festival is a great place to relax after a hard day at sea.

July

Tournament fever burns strong, with the Kona Throw Down and Skins Marlin Derby, not to mention the Blue Marlin World Cup. Check out the Honolulu Ukulele Festival if you get the time.

August

The Kona Shootout Big Game Tournament and Big Island Marlin Tournament give the pro teams no rest in August. Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) are on fire, and make for the best Tuna fishing Hawaii sees all year.

September

Tournament season draws to a close with Kona’s It’s a Wrap Tournament. The whole state comes alive in an explosion of color during the month-long Aloha Festivals.

October
Want to see Hawaii through the eyes of the locals? Visit the Hawaii International Film Festival to watch locally-made documentaries about island life. Afterward, head offshore for late-season Mahi Mahi action.

November

The fishing tournaments may be over, but the surfers are just getting started. The Vans Triple Crown tournament series kicks off on Oahu’s breathtaking North Shore.

December

The Vans Triple Crown draws to a close, just as the Honolulu City Lights festival brings the town to life in a spectacle of seasonal cheer. Bigeye Tuna are firmly back on the menu by December.

In November maybe be prepared to bring a rain jacket. Weather was hit and miss in days leading up but water was pretty calm once we got to open water.

The experience of being on the ocean was worth the price of admission. Itโ€™s fishing, not catching, so donโ€™t expect nonstop action. The captain put us on some small yellowfin at the start, so we all had fish to eat. We boated a 20 pound yellowfin and lost a nice mahi-mahi right at the boat. I did a trip at the Big Island a few years ago and had a similar experience in terms of fish at the boat. Ocean was bumpy but probably normal. Not an issue for me.

Remember it is called 'fishing' and not 'catching'. No one can control the weather, or make the fish bite. I have fished for over 50 years, so perhaps I have a bit more realistic approach, and expectations. You won't catch fish everytime you go out. When you can, and if you have the time and money, book a full day trip. It increases your chances of having a great day. Half-day charters are hard as it limits the time you have, and you may not catch the tides right.

These guys are awesome. They really put in the time to put on fish. They were great guys and they really cared about us having a successful trip. There are a lot of companies to choose from but we will never use any one else. Book with confidence. We didn't catch a ton of fish but we caught more than all of the other charters the day we went.

I took my 8yr old son out, The communication from the owner Brent was fantastic and very customer service oriented. Captain Dan got us on the fish, my son caught a Shortbill Spearfish (Hebi) about 7' long, it was a great experience, TJ was great on the deck making sure he landed it and everyone was safe. There was more Skipjack than we felt like reeling in.. :-) Everything was fantastic, the owner Brent, the Crew Captain Dan and TJ. Thank you all for an amazing trip!!

Capt Hopper and Jay were very hospitable and worked hard all day to put us on fish. The weather was bad with high seas, rain and bad wind, but these guys kept working. We wound up with 4 Mahi in the boat and reeled in a 200lb shark. The boat was nice, well kept, the tackle and gear was very nice. I would highly recommend going out on the Grand Slam.

Seasoned fishermen from Alaska found the best fishing charter in Kona. The Skillet with Captain John & Deckhand Dave were incredible. We've fished Mexico but Kona beats it. Caught a huge Tuna and a smaller blue marlin. Weather started off iffy but turned glorious. Boat was impeccable. Highly recommend.

What a boat!!! I can't wait to be back on the Reel Escape. Brent and his first mate bent over backwards to ensure a great day on the water and worked tirelessly in helping us catch some amazing fish. No long boat rides to catch fish either; we were fishing minutes out of the harbor - such a great location. Thank you for the great day - see you on our next visit to Hawaii!!
