Striped Bass Fishing in Chesapeake Bay

Striped Bass
  • Size 10 to 30lbs
  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Good
  • Habitats River, Lake, Inshore, Nearshore

(Morone saxatilis)

It’s no surprise that North America’s biggest estuary has much to offer. But one creature stands apart from the rest. Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass, or Rockfish as they’re known locally, are legendary. Big, tough-fighting, and delicious, they’re an all-round fish, and anglers of all levels visit the bay in search of them.

The beauty of targeting Striped Bass here is that you can do it everywhere, and pretty much however you want. From fly fishing in the Susquehanna flats, to bottom fishing the islands, or even trolling the open waters, you can always get your hands on one. These creatures will take pretty much any bait, too, so get ready for a fishing frenzy.

You can find Stripers year-round across the bay, with the spring spawning season offering up the best action. However, you won’t be allowed to take one home in Maryland’s waters during January, February, and April. Virginia only allows you to take home one per person except for six weeks in April and May, when fishing for them is prohibited.

You’ll have no issue finding a charter to take you in search of the revered Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass, either. Baltimore, Annapolis, and Deale offer a number of charters that explore the Upper Chesapeake Bay. You’ll also find plenty of captains as far south as Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Take your pick from pretty much any seaside town, and you’re in for the fishing adventure of a lifetime!

Just remember it's for fun and there is no magic wand a Captian and crew can wave to make the fish bite. So if the fish don't cooperate then just enjoy the ride and the view and have fun.

The fishing in Poquoson is fantastic, and you will catch multiple species. And, the scenery is beyond beautiful. You also don't have a long haul to the fishing grounds, so you get to spend more time catching than traveling. I whole heartedly recommend taking a trip here, and Marshland Expeditions will never fail to please.

I think other than the weather fishing would’ve been a little better, plus going in trophy rock season probably wouldn’t do that again but we did catch some decent size cat fish.

Find bloodworms and lug worms before your trip. I don't recommend staying at the Quantity Inn in Gloucester. Under major construction and the front desk help is not professional or nice.

To hot at current time for anything reliable catching, east coast is in a heat wave. It may be better at other times or in different years just not the time we went.

I would just recommend making sure that the weather is right for you, especially if you are prone to seasickness (ours was great anyway).

Just know fishing can go either way. Some days you hit the jackpot, and other days you just catch some fish. But, a bad day fishing beats a good day at work, every time. Enjoy the ocean, forget the cell phone except to take photos, and have a relaxing day.

Stay in-shore, practice with the smaller fishes! Your target should be bottom-feeders and whiting! You will have a great time, for the first time, if you try not to do to much.
