This trip is great for people who are interested in fishing Lake Michigan but don't want to be on the lake all day. Departure time is typically 5 AM mid June - early Sept, and 5:30-6 AM early/late season. Just bring along a cooler with anything you’d like to eat or drink, a fishing license with a great lakes stamp, and extra clothes as it's usually cooler on the lake.

Brown Trout Fishing in Wisconsin

Intro

The Trout fishing Wisconsin hosts is some of the finest freshwater angling you can find in the northeast of the US. With more than 2,500 Trout streams measuring over 6,000 miles, as well as 15,000 lakes in the state, it’s easy to see why Wisconsin has such a strong reputation.

How to catch Brown Trout

Brown Trout are one of the most sought-after freshwater species in Wisconsin. They like warm waters but still prefer underwater structures to hide under during the day. In Wisconsin you can target them year-round but the best fishing for trophies happens during the spring.

Changing your approach as the weather changes is a must, though. During warmer months, casting and trolling Minnow-type plugs is an efficient way of landing Browns. As the weather cools down, you should switch to a low-and-slow style with live or imitation bait. The fish become less active as they head to deeper waters, so presenting bait that’s very active might not entice them at this time of year. Minnow and Crayfish imitations have been known to land trophy Brown Trout reliably in the past.

Where to go for Brown Trout

Brown Trout can be found all over the state of Wisconsin. Look for the outside of bends in streams, areas with surface turbulence, and undercut banks.

With so many Trout streams and lakes to choose from, it can be daunting to pick a spot on the map and say “Here.” Booking a trip with a seasoned guide can save you a lot of headache – they know where the best streams are and can give you a shot at a trophy-sized Brown!

Good crew, bad decision by me.

Captain Darren tried to message me earlier about changing my trip and I ignored it. We came from over 3 hours away so I figured why not go out. They did what I asked in rough waters but I decided to cut the trip off early. My nephew did catch a nice Brown Trout. Captain Darren and his first mate were great. The morale of the story is to listen to your Captain. He knows what he’s doing. We did a trip with Top Knotch last year and it was great. We’ll definitely go with them again.

5/5
Had one of the best fishing experiences in quite a long time with Capt. Greg Windau and his first mate Kathy! Both are very knowledgeable and very experienced with Boat equipment and fish. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to have fun and catch fish. caught a nice 7 pound brown trout along with two coho and a 17 pound king salmon. What a wonderful afternoon. Give Captain Greg a call and you won’t regret it.
