Catfish Fishing in Lake Texoma
(Ictalurus punctatus/furcatus; Pylodictis olivaris; Ameiurus catus)
Lake Texoma’s Catfish population is really something to brag about. The world-record Blue Catfish was hooked here, after all! Whether you want to battle your very own trophy-sized Cat, or simply hook something tasty for dinner, a Catfish adventure in Lake Texoma is something that every angler needs to experience at least once. Come cast your line here alongside a local fishing guide, and you may find yourself breaking that world record!
Where to Go
The entire lake is pretty Catfish-friendly, and you’ll find three varieties here – Channel, Flathead, and Blue. Of these, Blue Catfish are generally the most widely-hooked and popular in Lake Texoma, abundant between November and March.
So now you know what you can catch, and when you can catch it – but where should you go? Catfish love lurking in waters that provide plenty of hiding places, such as river channel bends, stumps, laydown logs, big rocks, and muddy lake bottoms. Lake Texoma is full of hotspots that these sneaky fish inhabit!
Texas
If you’re closer to the Texas side of the lake and are looking for a family-friendly experience, head to the small town of Pottsboro. Here, you’ll find a variety of fishing guides who will take you to Little Mineral Arm, which branches out from Lake Texoma. The Catfish you can hook here are on the smaller side, but they’re abundant! You’ll also come across Crappie and other tasty Panfish.
For more experienced anglers, the town of Preston provides access not only to Little Mineral Arm, but also where the Red River leads into the lake. Huge Blue Catfish can be found in these brackish waters. Charter guides and captains will happily take you out for a full day, so you can get your fill of Catfishing.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma side of Lake Texoma offers up some prime Catfishing spots, too. The town of Durant is located at the point where the Washita River feeds into the lake, and Catfish love lurking in the murky waters created by this meeting. As well as huge Blues, you’ll also find the odd Flathead at the end of your line.
Looking for a Catfishing family adventure in Oklahoma? Head to the tiny town of Cartwright, which is located along the banks of Lake Texoma’s Burns Run. It’s quiet, secluded, and has amenities including a boat ramp where charter captains like to dock. Even better? There are plenty of fishing hotspots along the banks of the run, so many captains will happily take you out for a half day adventure, usually yielding seriously impressive results.
How to Prepare
No matter whether you opt for a half day trip or a full day on the lake, charter captains here know exactly what it takes to make an unforgettable angling adventure. You’ll generally be provided with top-quality rods and reels, bait, lures, and tackle. All you need to bring along is a valid fishing license. You can fish certain parts of the lake with an Oklahoma or Texas Fishing License, but the best choice by far is the standalone Lake Texoma Fishing License. This gives you full access to the entire lake!
Whether you want to break that world record, or stock your cooler with delicious dinner options, fishing for Catfish on Lake Texoma is something that shouldn’t be missed. Come discover it for yourself!
