Snook Fishing in Sarasota

Snook

  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Excellent
  • Habitats Inshore, Flats, Backcountry

(Centropomus undecimalis / nigrescens)

With a diversity of shallow waters just a stone’s throw from shore, Sarasota offers year-round Snook fishing. These temperature-intolerant creatures will spend winter upstream in the warmer waters of the canals and creeks before heading to the bays in summer. Hop aboard a fishing charter in Sarasota and see this phenomenal fishery for yourself!

What to Expect

Depending on the time of year you head to Sarasota, you’ll be fishing very different spots. That doesn’t mean that the fishing will be any different, though. Sarasota Snook fishing offers incredible light tackle action 365 days a year.

In winter, you’ll fish brackish waters of the rivers and creeks toward Bradenton. The calm waters, protected on either side by land, will give you the feeling of freshwater fishing while going after one of the most prized saltwater species. You’ll have the best of both worlds!

In summer, Sarasota and Roberts Bays are overflowing with these tough-fighting creatures. Spend between four and eight hours on the water, testing your skills so as not to scare the spooky Snook, and use your strength to get 'em out of the water.

Some charters even offer night trips to target Snook. Just 15 miles south of Sarasota, you’ll find “Snook Alley.” The name speaks for itself. Here, you’ll use the dock lights to spot your target as they rise to the top to feed on their preferred bait fish.

How to Prepare

To navigate these shallow waters, you’ll need a light, shallow-hulled vessel. Aboard a bay or flats boat, your captain will provide everything you need for a productive day out. Take advantage of top-of-the-line rods and reels (and plenty of live bait) and get your fish on!

All you need to do is bring some food and drinks aboard to make the most of your trip, and dress appropriately to protect against the sun. Come and experience the beauty and excitement of Florida’s Cultural Coast aboard a Sarasota Snook fishing charter.

Lots of sunshine and beautiful waters - we even saw dolphins. Super easy to get to boat and free parking to boot.

Captain Scott was great, he put us on the fish. At each stop he took the time to explain what type fish we may catch but also the technique that we should be using. We had a great day, catching snapper, catfish and a tripletail. This trip truly had the fish that got away, a giant tripletail that got away as it neared the boat. We definitely would recommend him and looking forward to future trips.

Water temp is a very warm 90โฐ plus, so certain types of fish are not running and/or biting. Sarasota is still beautiful this time of year, so I would still recommend it.

Be flexible with inshore offshore when the trip comes around. We wanted offshore but when the seas are rough the bays are protected and much calmer

It was pretty windy while we were there. There were some storms in the Gulf that probably threw the captain some curveballs to deal with. It was a good trip, but the captain seemed a little disappointed with the results. We are from the North, so the fishing still was excellent by comparison.

This was my first time fishing in Sarasota so I don't have a good basis for rating the experience. he weather was a bit tough the day we went so that may have affected fishing conditions

We caught plenty for dinner. I had hoped to catch larger fish. They averaged 8 -12 inches. Great variety. Mostly bottom fishing. Still a lot of fun.

If possible (not sure it is), check when fish are more likely to be moving and plentiful. Also, donโ€™t forget the sunscreen!

Make sure your captain knows the best areas to catch your โ€œmenuโ€ fish. You may want to call ahead to discuss.

The only problem with May is the love bugs but they really weren't that bad, though we didn't hit them at the height of their season. After a couple of months of enforced lockdown due to the virus, this was a more than welcomed diversion.
