About Spadefish fishing
Spadefish fishing is all about fast action on light tackle. These bold, striped sport fish gather in tight schools and hit small baits with gusto. They fight above their size, making them a favorite for families and first-time anglers, as well as seasoned pros.
You will usually target Spadefish while inshore or nearshore around reefs, wrecks, buoys, and pilings. Light spinning gear, small hooks, and fluorocarbon leaders work best. Clam strips, shrimp, crab pieces, and small jellyfish imitations are classic baits. Chumming with crushed clams can draw a school to the boat. When fish rise in the chum, sight-casting or drifting a bait under a float is deadly. Fly fishing with small crustacean or sponge patterns also produces when fish are high in the water.
Expect a fun, hands-on bite with quick hookups close to the boat. Fights are energetic but manageable, which makes Spadefish fishing great for kids and mixed-skill groups. Bring sun protection, a hat, polarized sunglasses for spotting fish, and non-slip shoes. Pack snacks and water, and be ready to keep baits small and steady. These fish have soft mouths, so use a gentle hookset and a smooth drag.
Before you go, check local rules. License and permit requirements, seasons, and harvest limits vary by area. Some places set gear rules or special protections near reefs and wrecks. Always follow current regulations and any instructions from your captain or local authorities.
