This trip is great if we're going offshore because it gives us time to troll for pelagic species for a while and bottom-fish the rest of the day, if desired. When fishing inshore, we are able to fish a portion of both tide phases allowing for a variety of species. We're typically back in time to have lunch with your catch at a local restaurant!

A 3/4 Day trip is where things start to feel like a fishing trip. Plenty of time to take advantage of a good bite! Best for folks with a desire to fish but don't always want to be out in the heat of the day. Offshore trips will be spent between 3-25 miles from land. For more serious trips 2-3 anglers is best but can accommodate groups up to 4. Keep in mind Summer time trips require live bait to be caught during the trip.

Tarpon Fishing in Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Florida is a go-to destination for many anglers looking for some epic inshore, flats, backcountry, and fly fishing. The best thing about the Tarpon fishing Jacksonville offers is that it will give you the best combo of those fishing styles, and even more. Many local charters specialize in putting their clients on the elusive "Silver King," and they will show you all the productive spots and the most efficient techniques.

What to Expect

The Tarpon fishing Jacksonville, FL is famous for is all about light tackle and fly fishing for this magnificent fish. The "Silver King" is a migratory species, and for the best results possible, visit the area between June and September.

If you're a light tackle enthusiast, you'll find a variety of charters offering anything from half day to full day trips. Most of the captains in the area use live bait when fishing for Tarpon – it's usually the easiest and the most efficient way to fish for them on light tackle. Menhaden (Pogy) are especially popular, followed by big live mullet, croaker, threadfin herring, smaller Ladyfish, Needlefish, and Pinfish.

Fly fishing fanatics will also find a lot of professional charters specializing in catching the Silver King on the fly. A 10–12 wt rod is the best choice, paired with an EP mullet in black/purple and large bait fish patterns. The top fishing areas include inlets and creeks. Tarpon can also be caught behind shrimp boats off the Mayport Inlet during summer, along with hungry Sharks.

Some of the other productive locations for Tarpon fishing are St. Johns River, The Nassau Sound Fishing Bridge, Clapboard Creek, and other intercostal creeks in Jax Beach.

How to Prepare

Fishing licenses are provided by all licensed guided saltwater boats, but you'll need a proper license to fish particular bridges, shorelines, and public peers. Conventional tackle is usually included – just make sure to ask your captain if he provides fly gear. You should pack sun protection, food/drinks, and a camera.

Whether you're itching to have the battle of a lifetime or just want to master your cast and have some fun on the water, Tarpon fishing in Jacksonville has you covered!

Captain Frank took us out on a 4 hour trip and within the first 15 minutes we were fighting a 40 pound tarpon for 20 minutes. Great experience and great time on the water with my friends!

The one(s) that got away!
5/5
Great time on the water today with Captain Troy! Caught a wide variety of fish and had some big boys on the line that we just couldn’t get into the boat - a couple 50+ lb tarpon that shook the hook and a bull red that a shark got. Fun all day long! Highly recommended.

Half Day Sheepshead Trip with Captain Frank Cole
5/5
Captain Frank was well prepared with all the necessary tackle and bait. We kept six (6) legal Sheepshead and released one oversized Redfish. Captain Frank is very knowledgeable about the local waters and keeps abreast of day-to-day conditions/trends. I have also beach fished with him for Tarpon and Kingfish and found his preparation and knowledge to be exceptional.
