Flats Fishing in Islamorada

Between the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and the stunning Everglades, Islamorada is at one of the great fishing crossroads of the world. Islamorada flats fishing charters live up to the hype of the “sportfishing capital of the world.” Battle it out with Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish for the flats “Grand Slam,” and you’re in for a trip to remember.

What to Expect

You might think sight casting in the shallows would be easy. Often compared to hunting in the water, flats fishing is much harder than it seems. You need patience and skill to entice your prized target.

These fishing grounds are a must for fishing enthusiasts, with non-stop light tackle action. You’ll need to be as quiet as a mouse to creep up on your spooky target. Sight cast into the water with a range of live bait or on the fly, and you’re in for great rewards.

You’ll feel the rush run through your veins as the rod doubles over at the bite of a monster fish. Huge Permit and Tarpon speak for themselves, while rapid Bonefish will give you the best pound-for-pound fishing around.

Islamorada flats fishing charters cater to anglers of all levels. The calm waters mean there’s no need to worry about sea sickness. These productive waters are full of some less picky fish, allowing you to land your first catch. Target Ladyfish, Trout, Barracuda, and even Sharks, and you’ll be hooked forever.

Flats boats are purpose-built for these waters. These light vessels with a shallow draft will stay afloat in even the skinniest spots. Your captain will steer you with a power pole to creep up on your prey, and you’ll have the edge over the fish if there’s a forward casting platform aboard.

How to Prepare

The Floridian sun can be harsh, so keep yourself protected. Wear long sleeves and a hat, and bring some shades and sunscreen along. Your captain may provide water, but you should bring your own drinks and snacks to make the most of the day, too.

Fly anglers will love the fishing opportunities here, but you should check with the captain if you need to bring your own gear.

Everything else you need is taken care of. Settle in for a thrilling adventure aboard an Islamorada flats fishing charter, and experience some of the best fishing in the world!

Lots of tarpon moving around the mangrove islands in October. A live shrimp, or a DOA shrimp is a great bait for the tarpon.

Plenty of sunscreen and be prepared to hunt for fish on the move. Offshore definitely preferable to bottom fishing this time of year.

Amazing time of the year to go fishing here in the Florida keys, Islamorada. Very quiet on the island as not many tourists are here. Weather is beautiful with little to no wind. Seas have started to cool down and the abundance of bait and fish is outstanding.

The islands are historically good for fishing. Water is beautiful and there are plenty of fish. Many choices of accommodations and restaurants. Very "laid back" beach town vibe. WE will definitely go back!

Come to the Keys at the right time of the year- spring /early summer or fall- winter time, July - August the water gets to 90 degrees and above- not conducive to great fishing. But itโ€™s still beautiful down here no matter the season.

I am not very knowledgeable of fishing seasons, but we liked being able to launch from John Pennecamp State Park and fish in some beautiful areas. Weather was perfect. Clear, sunny skies. Hot, but otherwise a great day fishing.

Be patient, listen to your captain, the fish are big but the ocean is much bigger, not easy to always find fish that are always on the move! What worked yesterday might not work today, so donโ€™t over expect!

Research, google, and try more than one charter. Call the Captain and others. Be ready for rough seas. If youโ€™re prone to seasickness, come prepared. But also be ready to have some fish to freeze.
