Reef Fishing in Islamorada
Spanning six islands in the middle of the Atlantic and the Gulf, Islamorada is ripe for fishing. Home to probably more professional fishing boats than anywhere else in the world, local Islamorada reef fishing charters will take you to the most productive spots in search of prized fish. Hit up the stunning, tropical reefs that span for miles and get your fish on!
What to Expect
The productive waters of the Florida Keys are famed all over the world, and Islamorada is no exception. As well as its wealth of inshore fishing grounds, the natural and artificial reefs provide exciting fishing year round.
These spots are excellent feeding grounds for a range of bottom-dwelling fish that love the warm water. You can expect to bottom fish and jig to catch their attention and land something tasty to take back to shore.
You’ll be fishing within minutes. While most Islamorada reef fishing charters offer trips of four, six, or eight hours on the water, some captains will take you out for two hours. These family-friendly trips are great for beginners and children to test the waters!
Closer to shore, you’ll go after some smaller-sized fish like Pompano or baby Snappers. Let your captain know that you’re a beginner and you could land your first catch here before heading further out. Go out to Pickles Reef and some of the wrecks that have become artificial reefs in their own right, and you’ll find a range of bigger fish.
Monster Yellowtail, Mutton, and Vermillion Snapper rub shoulders with Black, Red, and Gag Groupers to compete for the prized catch. These delicious creatures will make for a well-deserved treat at the end of the day, which your captain will clean and fillet.
You won’t only be hunting for food. Avid anglers will relish the chance to do battle with Amberjacks bigger than 100 pounds, along with Barracudas, Goliath Groupers, and many more.
How to Prepare
Islamorada reef fishing charters come with all the necessary fishing gear aboard. You may find a livewell full of bait, or you can pick some up on your way out. Most captains will provide bottled water for you to stay hydrated, but bring your own drinks and snacks to stay refreshed.
Some captains may want you to let them know what kind of fishing you’d like to do. Get in touch and say that it’s reef fishing you’re after, and get ready for a fun-filled day out!
