As a Hawaiiian born and son of a fisherman I had a rod in my hand from my earliest memories. I fished with my father around the world including the Indian Ocean,Hawaii, Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Siam, West Coast USA. As I became older the attraction of fishing in Cabo San Lucas became my dream, I started in the fleet in 1983, moved to the Cape and never looked back. Its been 34 years of hardcore fishing thruout the Baja Peninsula, Sea of Cortez, and the west coast of mainland Mexico Life is good and we are out again tomorrow!
Techniques
We fish many different techniques onboard Picudo. It varies with the time of year and the fish we are chasing. We are big fans of pulling dead baits, teasers, daisy chains, as well as lures, and always have a fresh bait in the tank ready to pitch! We fish biggame offshore and smallgame light tackle inshore. We spcialize in kids fishing, there's nothing better than getting the little buddies hooked for life. We welcome novice fisherman and are eager to teach and share our knowledge.

Offshore and inshore delight!
Offshore and inshore delight!
May 13, 2017 Cabo San Lucas
We were busting water big time as we headed out off the Cape rocks. The winds were puffin good and we were hanging on. We knew the Striped Marlin would be up tailing so we turned downhill and started to burn our eyes. We had the 50 lb. set ups out with some choice lures and a ballyhoo long. We trolled all the way into the Sea of Cortez with no action, and when we got into the lee it appeared we had failed. I turned in towards Chileno to check some smallgame spots and as luck would have it, 1 mile off the beach in flat calm water we were attacked.A Striped Marlin was up thrashing on the lures! It struck the shortflat, dropped back on the long rigger and wreaked havoc, then went long and started to decimate the sewed bait ballyhoo. Top decky Tin had the livebait dropback in the spread in no time and that marlin was all over it!! Hookup!! That marlin shredded some water, jumped all over and then finally settled down. The rest was text book as John worked that fish hard, and 23 minutes later Tin has that leader in his hand! John was stoked as he had just captured his 1st marlin!! Big congrats to John for a job well done. Well we still had a couple of hours left so we slid in tight to the beach to see if we could get something going. We switched ovet to the light 20 lb.tackle and started a chum line. We had squid tentacles on #2 hooks set about 50 feet off the stern. We began to slow troll, chumming with cut bait squid, and it wasnt long befor the reels were screamin! After an hour we were done!! It was nonstop pullin, hookin, catchin, releasin and just having a great time! When it was said and done we had caught 22 Pompano,4 small Snappers, a nice Jack Cravelle, and a few Triggers to round it off! We headed backtowards the marina with bags of filets, sore arms, amd smiles all around! Gotta love Spring in Cabo!!

Inshore Slam!
Inshore Slam!
Feb 28, 2017 Cabo San Lucas
What a fantastic inshore day we had with Pat and Robyn! It was a fullday Fishingbooker trip and we scored big time!! We got an early start and swung around the Cape rocks in the darkness. The sun was just giving us her first grey light as we swung by Cabo Fslso Lighthouse and we put the light trolling gear out. A couple of sewed bait ballyhoo in the riggers and three ultralights with hoochies flat were the trick for the early morning bite. We caught a few quick skipjack on the troll up and headed into our hotspot. We switched over to live bait jacks for bait and slow trolled for awhile. It was obvious after a half hour that the fish werent there. Couldnt get a bite! Well that sucked so off we went a couple points north and try again. The baits had no sooner hit the water when all mayhem broke loose! Reels were screaming and the rods were bent big time! It wss Sierra after Sierra! And fat ones at that! This went on for over an hour as we were snapping lines, catching fatties, getting bit off, landing a bunch and having a big time blast! We even caught a Yellowtail amidst the frenzied action! Well, the live bait was all used up and the bite slowed down so we headed south to our Pompano spot to see if they were still hanging out. As we slid into 20 feet of water off Pedregalito deckboss Poli switched over to cut bait squid on a small 20 lb. setup, with a 12 pound floro leader and a small #2 hook. The chum went out and it was an instant frenzy! The Pompano were flashing behind the boat and biting like crazy! Pat and Robyn were bit nonstop and fish were flying into the boat. We released the lil guys and kept a few fatties for dinner. The school was so thick we stopped chumming and they just followed the boat. Soon the Triggerfish joined the party and it was wide open!! Bait, fish, hookup, bait , hookup, bait, hookup till we couldnt catch anymore! With limits all around and tired arms we headed back to the marina. It was one of those classic days when weather, fishing, and great people came together! The inshore fishing is simply going off here at the Cape!! Out again tomorrow, cant wait! Yar!!

Fat Roosters and a mixed bag!!
Fat Roosters and a mixed bag!!
Jan 21, 2017 Cabo San Lucas
It was a perfect start as we rounded the Faro Viejo! We had the 30 lb. setups out with sewed ballyhoo, 2 in the riggers and one off the flybridge long. Down in the pit were 4 ultralights with hoochies rippling in the wake. The sea temps had chilled to 68, the early morning breeze was cold, and the sun was just poking her nose out when the reels screamed! It was a multiple hookup and judging by the movement on the rod tips I knew they were bonitos! We made quick business of those, got a little blood on the decks, and proceeded our troll up the coast. It didn't take long and as we headed into shallower water, the 30 went off with a hard strike, ripping line off big time! Our angler was quick to the rod and after a few minutes the fish settled down. 20 minutes later and after some good tuggin we caught and released a nice 30 pound Jack Cravelle! Down here we call them Toros! Muy buen Toro it was!! We had no sooner put the baits back out when WHAM we had another one on! We repeated the drill and in no time at all had another muy bueno Toro caught and released! Excelente start!! We saw some bait breaking in tight to the beach at Los Arcos so we swung in and switched over to the live bait mackerel on a slow troll. It was slow going as we swung by Pedregalito but we knew the fish were there. It was just a matter of time. I was just outside the breaking waves in about 12 feet of water when we saw the fish break water and crash on the bait. Jason the fishnfireman was quick on the rod and set the fish up perfectly! It was a great 1st run and we almost lost it as it swam under another boat. About 10 minutes into the fight we got a good look at it. It was a fat roosterfish all lit up going nuts behind the boat!! Jason kept his tip up and applied perfect pressure, not giving that fish a chance to turn! 5 minutes later he had caught and released his first roosterfish. It was a real trophy at 35 pounds and captured on a 18 lb. setup in 18 minutes! Needless to say Jason was one elated fishin fireman!! We stayed in the same area and caught a couple more roosters in the 15 pound range and then finished off our halfday using a squid chum line and catching some Pompanos and Triggerfish! The fireman were stoked and we headed back in with a bag full of fish. I must state how enjoyable it is to fish with these guys, Its all fun and with them being avid and experienced anglers makes it that much better! We headed in, gave Pancho his treat and ended another great day fishing onboard Picudo. The boys grabbed their filets and headed to the restaurant for a well deserved lunch and we prepped the boat for another day! The sea temps are perfect and it wont be long before the Amberjack, Yellowtail, and Snappers are here in full force! Gotta love the Winter season at the Cape! Yar!!

It was a quick halfday for Jeff and the Sacramento crew! They arrived late with little sleep but ready to rock. From the tidbits I picked up it appears that the night had been memorable. So with a fresh crew and blurry eyed anglers we b-lined to the Sierra bite. We headed around the lighthouse and pulled into the Dunes in about 40 feet of water. I noticed that the sea temp had dropped under 70 for the 1st time this season and the moon was still rather round so anticipation was high. We prepped the lihgt gear and pitched a live bait mackeral back in the wake. No sooner had it hit the water and we were on! The Sierra were all over the place! As our angler was pulling on a fat Sierra I looked over the side and spotted our 1st latenight victim blowing chunks! Get the chum going, Partyboys!! Yar!! We spent the next few hours hooking and landing, snapping leaders, losing a few! The live bait ran out and we hooked up some fresh deadbait ballyhoo with the same results. Hook up Hook up and Hook up! Jeff set the hook on another fatty when I heard a roar from the bow. A quick peek off the bridge showed partyboy #2 ralphing away! But what a trooper! He swigged some water, threw a fresh bait, and got instantly bit! These guya were great! We wrapped it up and headed back in. Bags of filets were heading to the restaurant and the boys were good as new soon as they hit the dock! I evev heard talk about getting some cold cervezas! Another classic day at the Cape!

Fat Sierras and Plump Pompanos
Fat Sierras and Plump Pompanos

We pulled out of the bay a little late and decided to hit the inshore bite. The tuna fishing outside was hit and miss, the Marlin were being tight jawed so it was off to the Dunes to see what inshore grabbers would show. We trolled tight to the beach at 4 knots in 20 - 40 feet of water with the light setups rigged with hoochies and our favorite Rapala Magnums. It was a no go and we only got bit once which we dumped after a nice inicial run. Well that was enough so we tucked it in tight at the Dunes and threw a couple of live bait Mackies in. We slow trolled and within seconds we were on! With a big swirl on the bait and a great run we knew these Sierras were going to be quality! We nailed the 1st one and as it was going in the bag the other reel started to scream! Another nice one! This went on and on! We caught our fair share, lost a few,:and filled the bag! Nonstop action and smiles abounded! The larger ones were up to 8 lbs. and they are a blast to catch on 16 lb.! We were done gere and it was time to finish the day with the Pompano! We headed back down to Rinconada to the honey hole and started our chum line with chopped squid bait. It took awhile but when they showed it was on! We fly lined em with squid tentacles for bait and it was a voracious bite! Everyone caught some and we finished up a fantastic trip! The filets were stacked high and our guests beelined it to the restaurant! Hard to beat those fresh fish filets! As we lose the moon its just going to get better! We're out tomorrow and i think we'll hit the rock piles. I heard rumor the Yellowtail are showing! Gotta love the Winter bite at the Cape! Yar!!

Pacific inshore with the gals!
Pacific inshore with the gals!

Tasha and Ally showed up early and we were out of the harbor well before daybreak. It was Allys birthday and the girls wanted to tug on some fish. Rounding the Cape tocks we decided to dedicate the day to the inshore grabbers and headed directly to the El Molino area to start this bday party! With the wind blowing lightly offshore, no swell, and seeing nice marks bait on the meter, I knew we were in for some action! The sun was just popping its head out on the horizon when I slowed the boat down in about 25 feet of water. Deckboss Poli had the 16 lb. setup ready with a live macky and no sooner than it hit the water we were bit!! Birthday girl Ally wss up 1st and was hanging on as this fatty ripped 150 yards of line out in seconds. We didnt have any idea what it was and the back and forth battle started. Ally did a great job pumping on this fish and after awhile we finally saw color. It was a fat Jack Cravelle and still full of fight. After pulling it out from under the boat a few times we finally nailed it. Ally girl got her birthday present and after a 29 minute fight landed her 1st fish in salt water! What a start! We couldnt get another bite so we headed up to Pedregalito and started a slow troll down hill. We were doubled up on the live bait mackys and were getting ripped big time by the Sierras. Even with a trailing treble hook set up those toothy critters got the best of us! Bummer for sure but thats the way it goes! We say "Ni modo" (too bad) down here! Then they showed. We were in real shallow water over a nice sandy stretch when the bait started freaking. I looked back just in time to see crests wailing as the school of Roosterfish started wreaking havoc. The bait never had a chance and these voracious biters were all over it! Tasha was bit big time and hanging on when Ally grabbed the other rod. Wham and it was a double! Tasha had hers to the boat in no time and landed her 1st Rooster! Screaming was heard all the way to the beach! Ally dumped hers but it didnt matter, they were celebrating!! We decided to finish the day at Rinconada trying for some Palometas. The other day we had raised them in the same area and figured it was worth a shot. We put out some light gear straight line with a 2/0 hook and a little splitshot weight crimped on about 4 feet up. We chunmed with chopoed small squid and used the tentacles for bait. We had barely begun the drift when the 1st ones showed and it was game on! The girls were on their own hooking and landing one after another! We even pulled aTriggerfish out of the mayhem! With tired arms and liimited out we left the school behind and called it a day. We headed into the harbor, gave Pancho the sea lion his daily treat, and it was a wrap! What a blast we had and a great birthday with Ally!! Feliz Cumpleaรฑos!!
