Background
I began fishing the flats and backwaters of Florida over 20 years ago. I have lived in Florida now since 2008 and spend over 200 days a year on the water in the Mosquito Lagoon and North Indian River areas. I grew up in the Pacific NW and fishing is some of my earliest memories. After my time in the Navy and College I went to work for Lamiglas, Inc. as a rod/blank designer. Lamiglas is one of the NW's largest Fishing Rod Manufacturers. After 20 years designing rods for Lamiglas I moved to Florida where I have been designing rod building components and equipment along with rod blanks for Mud Hole Custom Tackle.
Techniques
While I genuinely prefer polling flats and sight casting to tailing fish this isn't always an option. Weather has a great deal to do with being able to do this. While my first choice there are many other methods which are very productive. In the summer months cruising the coastal beaches for migrating Tarpon and Snook is something that we also look forward to. This fishery is typically mid July through late September. Some of the most productive fishing for "Big" fish is Late August through November fishing Ponce Inlet for Bull Reds, Snook & Tarpon. During this breeding and heavy feeding time the fish are plentiful most of the time willing to bite.
