What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Holden Beach, North Carolina for the first time?

The trip was on calm water, because the Captain communicated prior to the trip and adjusted the trio time. We caught many fish throughout the day, most were undersized but it was a great day and we were always catching fish.

Come in May! Hire a good guide like Tyler. I’ve hired quite a few guides in my time. Tyler in one of the best!

This was a week after a major storm so even though fishing was hard we still caught a bunch of fish.

Be prepared to be flexible with what you’re fishing for. No one was catching the larger fish anywhere on the morning we were out. But we caught a great haul of Spanish mackerel.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect for it being early November but the weather was perfect and mid 70s.

Be patient during summer heat. The captain will do all he can to make it work but at the end of the day it’s still called fishing and not catching.

Airy long sleeves and pants if you burn easy. Get in a boat. It beats surf and peer fishing any day.

Surf fishing is a bit of a learning curve but FRESH bait seems to work the best. Talk to the other anglers on the beach, all I spoke with were happy to give tips and pointers.

Action will depend upon the weather. Warmer days will bring more fish so if it is cold adjust your expectation accordingly. But remember that even a "bad" day fishing is great!

Due to weather conditions, and time of year, fishing was poor. Next time I would go in the spring or early fall.
