Some trips leave you with fish.
This one left us all with goosebumps.
The sea was glass. Sunset glowing behind the islands. The kind of evening where the water holds its breath.
Mark and his family were on board The Barb, chasing memory, chasing meaning.
He said to me, quietly:
“All I want is to fight one good Chinook before the light fades.”
Not even five minutes later…
Bang. Rod down. Reel ripping.
The No Bananas Spoon we’d set at 120 ft in 140 ft of water went off like a cannon.
Mark got his fight.
And the Chinook didn’t give it up easy.
It dove, it twisted, it tail-walked and slammed the rod like a steel freight train from the deep.
He fought it like a warrior—and he won.
But that’s not what made this night legendary.
A second rod popped.
Another big fish.
Mark’s teenage son looked unsure. It was quiet. You could hear the wind stop.
I leaned over and said:
“Step up, son. This is your moment.”
He did.
And with the whole family watching, he fought that Chinook like he was born to guide.
14 lbs. 75 cm. Keeper.
A memory burned into the soul of that boy forever.
