Surface Marlin Activity & Dorado Success

On June 17, we began the trip working 2 miles offshore, running south parallel to the coastline. While fishing off Cabeza de Ballena, we spotted a striped marlin tailing on the surface and pitched a live bait known locally as a cocinero. Despite a perfect presentation, the marlin refused to bite. Continuing south along the same line, off El Tule, the action finally turned on when a sailfish struck a bait and was successfully landed after an exciting fight. We then moved closer to shore, where we experienced a double dorado hookup. One fish struck a Petrolero lure, while the other attacked a pink trolling lure. Both mahi mahi were successfully brought aboard. On the afternoon of June 17, we headed toward San José del Cabo, working the 2-mile line parallel to the coast. Just after deploying the trolling spread off Primeras Piedras, a mahi mahi struck one of the lures. Unfortunately, after a brief fight, the fish managed to throw the hook. Continuing along the same course, about 10 minutes later, we hooked a skipjack tuna, which was successfully landed and released. A short time later, a mahi mahi aggressively attacked a blue and white Flying Fish lure, resulting in a successful catch and our first fish on board. We remained in the productive area, making several passes through the spot, where we hooked three additional skipjack tuna, all successfully released. On June 14, we departed Cabo San Lucas running a heading of 120°. At approximately 4 miles offshore, we got our first bite of the day when a mahi mahi struck a bait and was successfully brought aboard. We then continued working parallel to the coastline, moving in to about 2 miles off Cabeza de Ballena, where a striped marlin attacked a bait. After an exciting 40-minute fight, we successfully landed the fish, making it the highlight of the trip. With the marlin on board, we continued working the area, making several passes within a 3-mile radius. The persistence paid off when another mahi mahi struck a blue and white Flying Fish lure, giving us our second dorado of the day.
