Trip Summary

Hey there everyone, Capt. Vinnie here, with another Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing report for all of you. So for this week I would have to say the theme of the report is going to be honestly, now with that being said I would like to point out that in all reports I do my very best to give you the most honest and accurate report that I can, meaning good, and bad. Not every week the fishing is outstanding like others may make it seem it still is fishing after all and things change daily. Moving on to what you really came here for.... The report this week has been hit and miss meaning some days fishing is good and other days it has been a real grind and i think majority of what is making it a grind is the seaweed. If you have been watching the news or even social media I am sure you have seen a video or two of the beaches full of seaweed. Some days what's on the beach is on the fishing grounds before it gets to the beach. When the seaweed is on the fishing grounds it really makes it tough to troll and catch fish, you do get rewarded at times for grinding it out and fishing through the seaweed but it really is tough on the crew. As far as what has been biting lately on the reef there has been a scattered amount of king mackerel biting trolling baits fished below the surface and mixed in with them has been some bonitos. Kingfish are going to be caught on sea witches and bonito strips and the bonito are going to bite best on a drone spoon in the blue color. Moving just off the reef there has been some blackfin tunas, but they have been deeper then normal around 400 feet. Smaller baits are going to be best due to the bait they are eating naturally. Small baits would include squid skirts, spoons, or lures under 2 inches. The tuna have been active in the mornings but the afternoons seem to be more productive. For an offshore report this week the mahi have been biting pretty well but you do need a trip longer then 4 hours if you want to target mahi I suggest 6 or even 8 hours. There has been some nice weed patches out there as well as some floating debris which I have a photo I took of a floating wood pallet. This pallet that we found didn't have a bunch of mahi on it but it did have wahoo which in my opinion is better then mahi. That goes to show you never know and it always pays to be ready. Last but not least we did some bottom fishing this week with some old friends catching some really nice snowy and yellow edge grouper. In my opinion these types of grouper are the absolute best tasting fish in the ocean, they are somewhat rare and live in deep water where there is structure, they are a fish that is hush hush in the fishing industry. We were lucky enough to have the correct conditions to fish for these great fish and to get to catch them with some great friends brings it all together. The season is now closed on these deep water gems till next year. Coming up for the next few weeks I would expect the mahi bite to keep improving more and more as we reach the heat of summer, I also think we would start to see more and more kingfish daily as long as the seaweed stays controlled but that is a day to day basis so I am sending my prayers out now. Hello there, Capt. Vinnie here back with another Fort Lauderdale sport fishing report. This week has been a little slow for us here in the deep sea fishing department, it's offseason right now and these hefty fuel prices are not helping for business either, but we were able to get out on a few trips this week and thats all thanks to our great customers that come to fish with us which we are very grateful and thankful for. Fishing this week has been some what tough, i hate to say it but thats what it is, we seem to be having what's called a cold water upwelling at the moment and the reason I can confirm that is because we have been having northern currents on the surface and southern currents on the bottom bringing that colder water from up north, also we have been experiencing a healthy amount of rain and that has made the inshore waters very green. In terms of fishing the trolling bite has been decent to say the best, blackfin tuna and bonito aka false albacores have been super prevalent early in the mornings in depths around 200 feet, majority of the action has been on the surface with smaller lures trying to imitate flying fish, the earlier the better right now if you can get out before the sun comes up even better, once the sun seems to get up the bite fades quickly. There has been some pretty nice sized tunas around as big as 15lbs but the false albacores have been on the smaller side. Bottom fishing this week has been the real winner with solid catches of larger vermillion and yellow eye snappers. We had some very good luck fishing some hard bottom in 270 feet with some quality fish to prove it, the month of September is one of the last months that the snappers spawn out of Fort Lauderdale and from fishing out here for so many years I knew exactly where to look. Last but not least way offshore the mahi mahi fishing has been great but an all day trip is absolutely necessary because of the distance they been offshore. The mahi have been on weed lines and birds, the most important thing is to be ready incase a school comes up when you hook up, having extra rods rigged for that and live bait is going to help maximize opportunities if you get that school of fish behind the boat, September and October are great months for mahi fishing in Fort Lauderdale so keep that in mind when planning your next trip. Hello there, Capt. Vinnie here with another Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing report. This week has been a little bit of a tricky one, afternoon showers have been scaring a lot of people off from wanting to go deep sea fishing right now but the truth is, getting an early start like 7am can keep you in the fish and home in time to get you out of the weather. Now September is a month that is notorious for slow business here but it tends to have the best fishing of the whole year, which in terms makes that better for you the consumer. For the fishing report this week there has been a great bite inshore on kingfish. Kingfish is a very popular fish with a good amount of our customers. Its very good to make smoked for fish dip as well as blackened or fried. These fish have been very prevalent early in the mornings as shallow as 100 feet and have been biting best on our baits fished under the surface. Next species that has been good is blackfin tuna on early mornings, depths around 200-300 feet is where we have been fishing. The blackfin tunas like lures fished a little faster and a little further behind the boat, the most important thing is to not slow down when you get a bite, tunas are a schooling fish and keeping your same speed at the time of a hook up can result in multiple hook ups. Blackfins have been anywhere from 5-15lbs. We are just coming off of a full moon and that means wahoo, there has been a few nice wahoo as a "by- catch" while fishing for species like tuna. The outgoing tide in the early morning is going to give you the best chance at getting that trophy wahoo. Same depths as the tuna is where your going to want to be focusing most of your time, there has been a few bigger ones in the 30lb range but majority have been 18-25lbs. Another species that has been around and is always a pleasure is sailfish. These guys always bring joy to any anglers face with there fast runs and acrobatic jumps, primarily our sailfish season is winter to spring but we are seeing a nice little fall run right now, trolling has been the best option for all types of gamefish being there has been very light winds and a steady current. It is important to pay attention to surface baits with sailfish being around because you want to see the bite before they actually eat it. A lot of times sailfish will whack a bait with there bill and if there is no reaction they will loose interest quick, so its very important for the deckhand to notice that and reel the bait away to get that predator instinct. Hey there Capt. Vinnie here, back again with another great Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing report. For this week the weather has been excellent besides the heat, we have had some really nice flat calm seas and there has been some fish biting as well. The seaweed this week has seem to slowed down and given us somewhat of a break which intern lets us fish the way we know how to, on the inshore side of things the bonitos or little tunny have been in full force early in the mornings while trolling most depths inside of 150 feet have had great numbers of these fish, fishing with planners to take baits below the surface is going to keep your bait in the strike zone the longest. The best lure choice this week has been a 2.5inch blue spoon, the smaller profile makes it appeal to a lot of different gamefish. Also this week we did get some kingfish on this very same lure, just goes to show you whatever is around is what is going to bite that day. Kingfish have been very sporadic but we tend to see a good run of them in the fall when the mullet come down our coast. Bottom fishing this week has been pretty good when the current has been light but majority of the bigger snappers have been deep, as deep as 400 feet. If you can get those right conditions to be able to fish those depths the fish have been there, Larger vermillion snappers have been the primary catch but we did get super lucky and catch a very respectable american red snapper which is rare for our area but not so rare if you were fishing in the gulf side, you really never know what you might catch out there. For an offshore report this week the hot topic has been mahi, we had a nice push of them and they have been offshore on larger weed patches as well as birds too. The best advice I could give is to be ready with live bait and spinning rods incase you hook up and there is a school of mahi with the ones you have on, you want to maximize any opportunity you might get because it could be the only one all day, other then mahi offshore there has been a fair amount of skipjack and blackfin tuna on birds chasing bait, the key is to look for the birds and keep your lures far behind the boat, the noise of the boat will make the tuna go deep so if you have your baits way behind the boat by the time you pass them they will be on there way up and your baits will be the only thing around. Tuna feed in schools so its important when you hook up with one to not slow the boat down which can result in multiple hook ups.
