Trip Summary

Garrett & Marisa from Arizona are visiting Costa Rica for the first time & just spent a couple of days fishing with us aboard GOOD DAY in addition to lots of other activities such as Waterfall tours, kayaking, Zip Lining & more getting the full Costa Rican experience here in Quepos/Manuel Antonio! We released 1 Sailfish each day with each of the guys releasing their first ever Sailfish but the overall fishing proved to be a little slow unfortunately. During day 1 we had Tuna busting all around the boat, feeding on flying fish & schools of ballyhoo but we could just not get them to bite….they gave us some amazing scenes all the same & it was great to witness. The true highlight of the day was seeing a SWORDFISH swimming on the surface, lit up bright purple & I would put it in the **hidden content**lb range. We were just 15 miles Offshore from Marina Pez Vela & in 1100’ of water with a slow incline on the ocean floor. When we pulled our baits past it & I am convinced it had a quick look at our Blue & White Islander/Ballyhoo combo. This was the first Swordfish i have seen on the surface in Costa Rica in almost 7 years, so a pretty rare sight these days indeed. One of our Captain buddy’s seen another Swordfish on the surface about a year ago. Capt. Manuel tells me that back in the day 20-30 years ago that surface Swordfish were regular sights just 10-20 miles offshore, it is a shame that we don’t have the same numbers these days to make targeting them via day time deep drop a viable option for charter fishing. A few have been caught in recent years & if we REALLY put the time in, i am sure we could get some results but i just don’t think we have the numbers required to make it a great fishery. Very cool to see all the same & definitely goes firmly on my list of memorable Costa Rican experiences! Onto day 2 yesterday, Garrett released his first ever Sailfish of 101” which we tagged for Gray FishTag Research We had a bit of bad luck when a 30lb+ Bull Dorado threw the hook close to the boat & we also came undone on a really nice sized Tuna which took off like a freight train & became another story of the “one that got away”. It was a fairly slow old day but still Garrett was just a whisker away from Catching Sailfish, Dorado & Tuna which were all high on his Bucketlist. Day 1 1 for 1 Sailfish Day 2 1 Sailfish (raised 3) Lost a big Bull Dorado Lost a nice Tuna Always an adventure out there, thank you for fishing with us guys & hope to see you back aboard GOOD DAY again in the future!
