Had the pleasure to fish another slam tournament this past weekend with an old friend of mine. We set out that morning beginning our day throwing some artificial lures in and around creek mouths. We had success landing several decent trout on topwater. As the sun rose we busted out the cast net and rounded up a few dozen live finger mullet to use on carolina rigs in search of redfish and flounder. We immediately had success on the live mullet catching a nice slot red on our first cast with the mullet. We then had two of the three in our livewell so now it was time to go look for a Flounder. We managed to catch 7 flounder that day but couldnt find any giants. We were also able to catch several more big trout throughout the day on live mullet. Ended up weighing in a bag of 8lbs in the tournament which did not land us any prizes but we came home with plenty of delicious filets that were blackend the next day with friends and family.

Its the end of April and the water temp in the St.Johns river is creeping into the low to mid 70s. The mullet are thick in the Intracoastal waterway serving as a great source of food for the North Florida Slam. The slam includes catching a Redfish, Trout, and flounder all in one trip. Although these three species are abundant in the St. Johns river its no easy feat to catch all three in one day. For the next several weeks the opportunity to catch a slam will be at its best until the water gets too hot. Big seatrout are spawning and on the hunt and my favorite the Flounder have begun to invade their usual haunts. On my last trip the hardest fish for us to find that day for our slam was the Redfish. We had two great opportunities with one slot sized and one Bull Red both pulling hooks next to the boat. Although we didnt successfully catch our slam that day we managed to bring home three keeper flounder and a speckled trout.

On the last day of March we were gifted a beautiful morning of liggt winds and a low incomjng tide. We set out in search of crawling redfish on shallow flats and targeted them with artificial lures. We had quick success boating two redfish that we sight fished. The angler on todays trip made a great casts and was able to decieve the fish without spooking them. After the tide rose for a couple hours we switched up out tactics and set out to look for a variety of species. We fished live shrimp and fiddler crabs and were able to land several nice sheepshead, trout, and a few more small red fish.
