Recently I had a guest on the boat from Virginia here in the New Smynra Beach area on vacation. Bruce has some experience fishing but mostly up north chasing stripers. The idea of stalking a redfish in the shallows is pretty foreign to him as he hadnt ever caught a redfish but he was definitely up for the challenge. The first spot we went to I had been seen a school of about 60 redfish or so in for the past couple weeks but as the water temp had come up a few degrees the school had seemed to disperse. We found a couple hanging out on a point and on Bruces first cast at it he hooked up! Unfortunately this first fish wouldnt stay pined, Bruce although disappointed the fish got off, was instantly hooked with the idea of watching another fish eat the next bait. As we moved spots the next spot was alive with fish, Bruce had a half a dozen shots at overslot fish before he hooked up on this big girl. Overslot 32” redfish is a doozy of a first redfish to catch. Many more to come Im sure. We finished the day with another first for Bruce, a good size snook under a mangrove. All in all a great day for firsts.
