I’ve been fishing in cabo once before, and it was a great experience. This was far from it. We were charged more than expected at the dock (more than the bait estimate), but we shrugged it off and paid. There was no communication about the plan or conditions, we just beelined it for the pacific, which was pretty big water. We were completely soaked right out the gates (fine..) and as the water got bigger I just kept looking at the captain for reassurance that this is fine/normal. He seemed relaxed, so i tried to find reassurance from that. When our captain was setting up lines, we had to drive the boat in water big enough for the bow to go under water. While we were trolling, I was really freaked out by the conditions. We were side surfing down waves where the side rails were super close to the water. Shaking like a leaf, I finally ask the captain if this is normal, and he just gestures at the water…“not good.” I think he was referring to the fishing conditions and not necessarily our safety, but…either way, why are we out here then? I kept looking around and didn’t see a single other boat out there, they had all been coming in when we were going out. So all reassurances out the window, we said we wanted to go back to calm waters. Even with the language barrier, more communication was needed. It was radio silence out there. The goal of a fishing charter is to hopefully catch fish, but mainly to give the customers a good experience. I was scared out of my mind. I wasn’t expecting calm flat water, and feel my expectations were set appropriately, but it ended up being a bit of a nightmare.
