Captain was notified we were fly fisherman but we wanted to also have spin rods with live bait in case of high wind, inability to site cast due to murky water, etc. Had messaged him that in advance. He had artifcial lures. We were in town for a bachelor party and one of the first things he said caught us all off guard (basically saying don’t get married, lol). Ended up catching some needle fish and hooking a snook (we lost the snook due to a guests error). All in all, the Captain took us 45+ mins to mainland-ish Everglades from Islamorada accordingly to him but felt like longer. This also meant 45 mins back. That’s 1.5 hours of 8 hours spent sitting on a boat not fishing. I’ve had dozens and dozens of guided trips in the keys and South Florida and never have I once spent that long getting to the fishing spot and back other than deep off shore trips which is always discussed ahead of time. Captain also got back to dock 40 minutes early without asking or talking to us about that and blamed it on not being sure how long it would take to get back. At the same time he said he had a lot of experience fishing that area. So, 1/4 of the time was really wasted. Had we landed some huge tarpon like we wanted to or something I wouldn’t care, or had he been poling all day I wouldn’t care, but it seemed like lazy guiding. That’s like throwing $200+ away. Fished the next day with a different captain and maybe spent 1/4 of that amount of time driving around and caught 5x the fish. Nick was also fishing during the trip which was strange; both of my friends said they couldn’t really cast at times because he was casting; haven’t really experienced that before. He caught the best fish of the trip (seatrout). Felt like this was a waste of money and day and a little bummed since me and my buddies flew out here from across the country. He also never once got out his pole even when we saw a nice creek outflow that was 50 yards in front. He said it was too shallow even though I know we could have poled there without motor and trolling motor. When we went that night with a different guide I’ve gone with we landed a 30” tarpon, hooked up to many more, and had shots at huge tarpon. The next day with a different guide that I’ve never gone with we had a much better experience, had shots at big tarpon, hooked a big shark that resulted in a long fight, had shots at permit, and caught dozens of snappers. I get if fishing is slow, I still pay and tip etc, but this was a strange day and all three of us agreed. He also never asked what we wanted to listen to (he just played an old rock station) or what we wanted to do (as in, if something wasn’t working, where we wanted to go or try to do). Every other guide I’ve been with is like “I want to take you over here, are you ok with that?” or “let’s try here and let me know when you want to move. Overall not a good experience and wish we had booked a different guide unfortunately.
