I reserved a 26’ “super panga” for my wife and I. This was our third fishing trip to La Paz, together. For perspective, I’ve fished there 4 times previously with friends, at 2 other charters I kept trying to find a company and Captain that wasn’t just going through the motions. We’ve fished Cabo a few times, as well. Anyway, we couldn’t have been treated better. Our captain Javier, was engaged and very knowledgeable of the fishing areas. After 3 days of time on the beautiful blue/green water, you have a clue as to what makes another human tick. Javier is a fisherman. He is driven to hook every fish that strikes. Even better, He gets “it”. If something isn’t working, try something else. My father taught me, “the fish are always feeding”, it’s about where you are fishing and what and how you are presenting. Javier is after fish… he isn’t there to just give you a ride on the water. He produces. I have fished with dozens of charters in Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean over the past 35 years and I’ve gone on more than a few “boat rides”. Tish, my fishing partner and wife, was with me on almost all those trips. Javier made us laugh, gave us tips to help us be more successful at hooking and landing the different species and speaks near perfect English. If there are fish around, you will have fun! Rodrigo runs the office and like Javier, he has been with the owner of the Mosquito Fleet for over 2 decades. I’ve never encountered someone at a fishing charter who would do anything in his power to make your trip extra special. Upon arriving back at the dock, Rodrigo expedited our fish cleaning and asked what we wanted to do with our catch. All 3 days we asked that our fish, mostly Dorado, be packaged and frozen. He also arranged to have some filets of our fish be prepared into Ceviche as well as grilled with vegetables and mashed potatoes that we enjoyed at the Cortez Club, 50 feet from the dock. Their Ceviche preparation is the best I’ve ever eaten. Of course, it helps when the fish is 2 hours fresh! James, the very personable owner of the waterfront Cortez Club restaurant and bar and Mosquito Fishing Charter is worldly and “old” enough to understand what is important to those of us who love to fish. He knows he is fortunate to have a loving family and loyal crew who are the backbone of a service business. From the jumping Mantas and Humpbacks to the great food, drink and “moments in time” connecting to others, we had our best trip to Baha ever!
