If you’re looking for the most intense fishing action in California, then Orange County deep sea fishing will give you a lot to dream about. A range of species call these abundant waters home and you can catch all of them if you come at the right time.
Where to Fish
One of the greatest advantages of this fishery is that there are many incredible fishing spots to choose from. Two of the Channel Islands – Santa Catalina and San Clemente – are by far the favorite treasure troves of local anglers and charter captains. Given the variety of species that live here, it’s hardly a surprise.
You’ll find Santa Catalina some 30 miles from the mainland, its surrounding waters teeming with a wide range of species. Favorite year-round catches include massive Calico Bass, Halibut, White Seabass, Yellowtail, and hard-fighting Sharks. San Clemente offers similar fishing opportunities, but you’d have to travel 60 miles offshore to get to this fishery.
Summer brings all the trophy fish to these waters, and if you’re looking for the fishing fight of your life, this is the time to do it. Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna are the stars of this show, as well as Mahi Mahi, and Blue and Striped Marlin. All of them are a thrill and a challenge to reel in, as well as a prized catch.
What to Expect
If you want to hit waters over 1,000 feet deep, then you’ll need to book a full day trip (at least) with one of the local captains. Many of the guides offer extended and overnight trips that will put you on the trail of incredible Tuna action.
Your expedition could cost anywhere from $900–$2,500 per group, depending on the amount of time you want to spend on the water. Whether you want to fish from a party boat with dozens of other people around you, or you’d prefer a private outing with your fishing gang, it can all be easily arranged.
To get ready for your fishing trip, buy a fishing license, bring plenty of food and drinks, and sunscreen. This summer is the time to explore the excitement that Orange County deep sea fishing has in store!

Fishing can be hit and miss. Usually good fishing with a good captain, boat and waters. Have enjoyed good fishing for sculpin, red fish, and bass. Great harbor just larger to exit than others.

I think early morning fishing is the best. I suggest at least half a day. The sea was very calm, hardly any waves and easy to catch the fishes. If you go deeper into the sea, you should be able to catch much larger fishes.
