What to Expect
This is a captain owned and operated charter focused on providing a one of a kind fishing experience. Captain Matt runs every trip personally and is committed to putting you on fish while keeping the experience safe, enjoyable, and memorable for everyone.

Trip Options:
2-hour (short & scenic), 4–5 hour (best for pelagic fish), bottom fishing (reef species), and sunset tours (great views, lighter fishing). Longer trips = better chance at bigger fish.

Catch Policy (Please Read Carefully)
Hawaii Whale Tale Tours operates as both a charter and a working fishing vessel.
Catch is primarily retained by the captain. If you would like fish to take home, you may purchase your catch at market price. Fish cleaning is time-intensive and only available if pre-arranged and time permits. Select catches may be shared at the captain’s discretion.

Guest guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for everyone:
No glass containers or bananas on board. Bring sun protection, snacks, and drinks.
Respectful behavior is expected at all times.
Gratuity is customary and appreciated for great service

Ages: 7+ for 5-hr trips; 5+ for shorter trips (contact captain).

Captain Matt runs every trip—showing up early, staying late, and working hard to put you on fish.

Unforgettable Day with Captain Matt — Whales and a Keeper Uku

Kids trip- for the little guys. on March 8, 2026 • 4 adults • 2 children

Captain Matt delivered a fantastic day on the water. We were lucky enough to watch whales breaching right off the boat, which alone would have made the trip memorable. On top of that, he put us right on the fish and that is saying nothing of the gorgeous scenery. We caught several and landed one big keeper uku that ended up making some incredible tacos later that night.

Matt clearly knows these waters and works hard to get you on fish, but he also keeps the whole experience relaxed and fun. Great captain, great local knowledge, and a memorable day for our family. Highly recommend booking with him if you want the full Hawaii fishing experience. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Braving the weather

Wahoo and Mahi trolling the ledge!! on March 23, 2026 • 6 adults

we arrived a few days after the historic rains that turned the ocean into a chocolate soup. inspite of it, we went iut and were able to see a whale breaching many times. Matt was very knowledgeable about whales and this was a main reasons my daughters wanted to go on the boat. missiona accomplished for them. We had a ten foot shark come next to our boat as well. The weather seemed to worsen while out and as a result, we chose to come in a little early. We will definitely use Matt when we come back and will refer him to our friends. Thank you!

Dolphin Viewing with Fish Trolling on May 27, 2026 • 4 adults

We did not catch anything.  We had 3 bites.  I read through reviews and most caught at least 1 so wanted to make sure that something is out there saying….it’s very possible you go out and catch nothing.  The time for the tour kept changing….I booked 7, then he texted 9, then 6.  It was because of conditions (which I appreciate), but the posting should mention there’s a time range.  I booked the dolphin viewing and shoreline fishing because my son gets seasick and figured if we didn’t catch anything at least they’d see dolphins and get to catch bait.  We did not get that tour.  Went out and back (both kids indeed got sick) with no communication until I mentioned afterwards that that was not the tour we booked.  It was because of conditions (which again, I appreciate), but I wish that would have been communicated before the tour so we could choose whether to proceed (we definitely would have cancelled since my son struggles with seasickness).  Boat was clean.  Guide was enthusiastic and kind.

Stormy but a lot of fun

Unfortunately we had a storm that day so it was very choppy and there was a storm at one point. We had reserved this ~2 months ahead. But it was a lot of fun. Had some bites, one unfortunately snapped the line. But we had some fun and did exactly what we wanted. Will look to book again in the future

unforgettable trip

Troll and bottom fish . Custom . on November 24, 2025 • 2 adults • 2 children

Captain Matt is an amazing captain, he definitely knows what he is doing. He is full of knowledge and doesnt mind sharing. We were a party of four(two adults and two kids). We knew it’s fishing and not catching, not a guarantee that we will catch fish.  

He did not waste time to get us on the fish. He was very thoughtful/mindful of our 11yo and 9yo. Both of our kids were abled to reel in a mahi mahi each. We saw some dolphins, lots of flying fish and some sharks feeding. We had hooked up with something big, but it got away. At the end of our trip he cleaned and filet our fish, we’re having fish tacos tonight. 

Now we have stories to share with friends and family thanks to Captain Matt. This is by far the best fishing charter we’ve been on so far on the islands. We will book him again the next time we return. Thank you so much!
