Fishing in Coco

Known as a place that grants a laid-back and easy living lifestyle, Coco is a popular place for expatriates or retirees. Located in the south of the Gulf of Papagayo, Coco is only 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport. It used to be a small fishing village but thrived in the past decade with growing tourism and sport fishing. Playa Del Coco offers lots of budget options for accommodation, as there are no big resorts or hotel chains and most hotels are small, locally owned businesses. Blessed with great weather year-round, there’s never a bad time to plan your next Coco fishing adventure!

Which trip is best for me?

Inshore Fishing

Staying close to shore is a great option for novices and families with children, especially if you want to combine fishing with sightseeing. But these trips are exciting for experienced anglers as well, as your main target will be the famous Roosterfish. The locals (or “coqueños,” as they call themselves) are very proud that Coco is one of the best spots in the country to target Roosterfish, year-round. You can also catch Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and others.

Offshore Fishing

The Gulf of Papagayo is a great place to target big game fish! You can catch Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, or Wahoo almost year-round. These adventures require a bit more dedication and experience. Some great fishing spots are 13 miles from the coast or more, so you’ll need to take a full day trip to make the most of your time on the water.
Note that Billfish and Roosterfish are catch and release only. This is one of the reasons these species are well-preserved and you’re very likely to find them on your hook.

What to Bring

Most fishing charters will make sure you have everything you need to catch fish, cover your drinks and snacks, and clean your catch. Before you jump aboard, make sure to pack:

  • A fishing license – you can purchase your license in any INCOPESCA office or online. However, if you plan on surf fishing from the beach rather than fishign from a boat, you don’t need a license.

  • Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses – anything that will keep you safe from the sun is highly recommended.

When to Go

Coco is blessed with warm weather year-round, which reflects on its fishing season. Inshore species are consistent throughout the year, but while you can catch big game species year round, they’re most plentiful during summer.

March–May are the hottest months and the rainy season peaks from August–October.

Coco is not only a great spot for a summer vacation but also a perfect getaway for the winter holidays. Besides fishing trips, this family-friendly area has an astonishing coastline, thrilling zip line, and unforgettable tours where you can swim with sharks, turtles, and stingrays. Once you get to this fishing haven, you’ll realize why so many people decided to move here for good.

Coco Fishing Seasons

With plenty of sunshine and no rain, January is a great escape from the winter. You’ll most likely catch inshore species such as Roosterfish, Grouper, and Jack Crevalle.

February is typically the windiest month in the area, but you can still target all of the inshore species. When it comes to offshore trips, you’re most likely to catch Mahi Mahi and Marlin.

This is the hottest month of the year, so be extra cautious with sun protection. Fishing opportunities are promising as always for inshore species.

It’s still peak season for Grouper and Jack Crevalle, with better fishing opportunities available inshore than offshore.

This is where it gets interesting for big game fishing! The peak season for Sailfish starts in May, and there’s also more Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Roosterfish than usual.

Fishing only gets better in June! This is when you can also catch Yellowfin Tuna and the peak season for Cubera Snapper begins.

The dry season is long gone and heavy rains are on their way, although, not regularly. July is one of the best months for big game fishing.

Lots of species reach their peak in August. You’re very likely to catch Sailfish, Wahoo, and Marlin. Inshore fishing is great, as always.

You could say that September is a “peak month” all around: This is when you’ll get the most rain but also the best chances for both big game and inshore fishing.

As the rainy season stops, big game fishing slows down as well. You can still catch lots of Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi.

Cubera Snapper and Yellowfin Tuna are still easy to catch and let’s not forget the main star of the show– Roosterfish.

In winter the focus switches from big game to inshore fishing. Spend the holidays targeting Grouper, Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and more.
