Fishing in Fernandina Beach

Located on Florida’s Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach got its name in honor of Spain’s King Ferdinand VII. This isn’t the only connection it has to nobility, though. With the amount of famous exotic fish and prized game species calling these waters home, Fernandina Beach fishing charters give you the chance to hook some serious Floridian royalty!

Inshore, the bountiful Intracoastal Waterway, winding backwaters, inlets, and jetties hold Redfish, Trout, Drum, Flounder, and Tarpon. For anglers looking to pack their cooler, local reefs offer Grouper, Sheepshead, Cobia, Kingfish, and others! Opt for a federally-licensed charter and offshore Mahi Mahi will also be within reach.

A half day trip allows for plenty of angling action and is perfect for novice anglers and groups with kids. If you extend your trip by a couple of hours, you’ll get a better chance at maxing out on your limit, making these 3/4 day trips well worth it. Finally, full day adventures are typically reserved for offshore adventures to the federal waters.

In Fernandina Beach, you can find charters sprinkled throughout the town. Fernandina Harbor Marina is one of the popular locations as it gives quick access to some of the area’s best inshore spots. Closer to the Saint Marys Entrance is the Dee Dee Bartels Public Boat Ramp, a popular launching point for offshore trips.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing permits for guest anglers are covered by all licensed saltwater fishing charters in Florida. If you plan on fishing with a professional captain, you won’t need to worry about buying a fishing license. If going alone, you’ll need a Florida fishing license before baiting your hook. You can purchase these online or at any local bait shop.

January

One of your new year’s resolutions should definitely involve heading down to Fernandina Beach in January for some first-class fishing! Sheepshead are especially rife around the reefs.

February

The Sheepshead bite only gets better, so make sure you opt for a federally-licensed charter that’ll take you out to the plentiful reefs. Inshore, Redfish are biting hard around the jetties!

March

With the Redfish bite staying strong, March is an excellent time to visit – head to the shallows and jetty waters to target this species. Black Drum are plentiful around the reefs.

April

March winds may bring April showers, but that shouldn’t stop you from fishing! Around the reefs, Cobia start to make an appearance. Want to battle feisty Wahoo? Head offshore for your angling adventure.

As the weather heats up, so does the fishing – huge Cobia lurk around the reefs, Tarpon are inshore, and Mahi Mahi appear offshore. After you’ve got your fill, head to the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival!
