Fishing in St. Petersburg

If you’re looking for some of the finest angling action in West Florida, St. Petersburg is by far one of the best spots to cast your line. And if you need help finding your catch, fishing charters in St. Petersburg, FL won’t let you down.

Fishing in the "Sunshine City" involves gorgeous year-round weather and amazing casting opportunities. Inshore fishing is all the craze, so head out and get yourself a West Coast Slam – hook Snook, Redfish, Trout, and Tarpon, all in one outing. Let’s not forget about Jack Crevalle, Flounder, Sheepshead, and Shark species that roam the flats and beaches.

Nearshore, in the prolific Tampa Bay, the action is just as hot. You can find record-breaking King and Spanish Mackerel in the fall, as well as seasonal Cobia, Grouper, and Snapper throughout the year. If you want to explore the abundance of the Gulf of Mexico, there are plenty of guides who are offshore-ready. You could hook into anything from Sailfish and Mahi Mahi to Wahoo and Tuna, just to name a few.

St. Petersburg is a fishing hub, so the variety of charter trips is superb. Inshore half day trips are perfect for families, while full days could land you a West Coast Slam or bring you face to gills with the Tarpon of your dreams. Offshore and deep sea fishing trips are usually reserved for more seasoned anglers with their sights set on catching their next trophy.

Some of the best spots to find your perfect charter are O'Neill's Marina, Bay Pines Boat Ramp, and Fort De Soto Boat Ramp. If you leave your angling destiny in the hands of a fishing charter in St. Petersburg, FL, you better be ready for reel-screaming action of a lifetime.

St. Petersburg Fishing Seasons

January
Winter in St. Pete won't stop you from enjoying the sea breeze. With mild temperatures and fish that are always hungry, success on the water is only a cast away. Trout in Tampa Bay or reef fish offshore, the choice is yours.
February
Landing a Gator Trout is not uncommon this time of year – catch them over the grass flats for a tasty meal. Fish the canals along St. Pete Beach for a range of species, which prefer the relatively warmer waters.

March
If you're looking for variety, then from mid-March onwards is the time to hit Tampa Bay! Big Redfish join Trout in the flats, and the bite is excellent. Snook start to emerge and the beaches come alive with migrating fish.
April
As the temperatures rise, the fishing is getting red hot as well. The first Tarpon of the season are showing up at St. Pete Beach, while the Redfish and Snook bite is getting better every day.
May
Snook season closes through to September. Although you can't keep the fish, you can catch and release them in abundance as they spawn along the beaches. Find them from south of St. Pete Beach to the north past Clearwater Beach.
June
By now, Tarpon season is in full swing. Snook continue to spawn along the beaches and catch-and-release is allowed. Head to the flats to catch Blacktip Sharks in just 3 feet of water. The federal Red Snapper season opens for charter boats.
July
Tarpon fishing remains fantastic and is the main attraction at this time of year. You can also head offshore for your fill of pelagic giants like Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Tuna, and even Billfish.
August
The weather remains very hot and humid. This makes deep water fishing nothing short of fantastic, with various Grouper and Snapper species on the menu. Inshore, fight a Tarpon or Shark in shallow water.
September
As the tourist season winds down, the fishing season is just getting better and better. Big King Mackerel arrive close to the beaches during their fall migration. People from far and wide come to catch a “smoker.”
October
Tarpon season winds down, although you can still catch them over rocky bottoms. They love the Stone Crab season because they can eat like kings that they are. Just watch out for the crab lines once you're hooked!
November
Celebrate the amazing Kingfish migration by taking part in the Old Salt King of the Beach Tournament. Otherwise, catch Gag Grouper in as little as 12 feet of water and enjoy the return of hot Trout fishing in Tampa Bay.
December
Celebrate the holidays by seeking out Spotted Seatrout in the Tampa Bay flats . As the water cools, look for Redfish, Sheepshead, Snook, and Grouper around the docks and channels near St. Pete Beach.
