If ever there was a city made for enjoyment, it has to be the capital of Hawaii. Whimsically known as “The Big Pineapple,” Honolulu boasts gorgeous beaches, awe-inspiring views, and of course, first-class fishing opportunities. If you’re visiting for the first time and you’d like to wet your line, dozens of Honolulu fishing charters are at your service.
Hawaii is famous for its epic deep sea fishing. As the home of the Blue Marlin world record, Honolulu is the mecca of trophy chasers, and in these prolific waters, you can target anything from Marlin, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi to Wahoo, Sharks, and Shortbill Spearfish.
Even if you’re not keen on battling monster pelagics, you’ll still be spoiled for choice on the local vibrant reefs. This is where you go for a fun day of bottom fishing for Snapper, Grouper, and Triggerfish. The local flats have a big Bonefish population, as well as Barracuda, Ladyfish, and Jacks. The Trevally bite is particularly good in the inshore waters.
With an abundance of fish comes a great choice of charters and an even better variety of trips. Bluewater is very close to land (1–2 miles) and even half day options can put you on premier big game action. Reef and bottom fishing trips are perfect for families, and you can even book a shared excursion, which tends to be more affordable.
The best spot to find a fishing charter to your liking is the Kewalo Basin Harbor. You can also find a number of boats in the Ala Wai Harbor, just a few minutes away from Waikiki Beach.
Rules & Regulations
No license is required for recreational fishing in Hawaii. However, size and bag limits do apply and some species are restricted at certain times of the year. Hitting the water with a Honolulu fishing captain is the best way to make sure you fish according to local regulations.
