Fishing in Grand Isle

For incredible year-round fishing, nothing beats a trip aboard one of many Grand Isle fishing charters. Why are they so great? For one, the sheer variety of fish you can catch! Grand Isle sits on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico and is flanked by the Mississippi River Delta, meaning inshore, nearshore, and offshore fish are all in the cards.

The ultimate bucket list catch in Grand Isle is Yellowfin Tuna. But that’s not the only pelagic fish you’ll find around here. Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Blue and White Marlin all join in on the fun during different parts of the year.

Travelling into deep offshore waters isn’t a requirement for good action, though. The Southern Louisiana shoreline is known for fantastic battles with Redfish. These tasty fish are also joined by Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Sheepshead. Head just a little further out and you’ll add Amberjack, Cobia, and Snappers to your target list.

Extended full day or even overnight trips are a requirement if you’re fishing for Yellowfin Tuna or other pelagic species. If you’re short on time, or just don’t feel like travelling that far out, fantastic inshore and nearshore battles can happen in just half a day on the water.

A quick glance at the area's marinas and boat ramps reveals pretty much every vessel under the sun. From inshore skiffs to large sportfishing vessels, you’ll have a variety of options in Grand Isle. Depending on where you’d like to fish, depart from the Gulf side or the Mississippi River Delta side.

Rules & Regulations

Since you’ll be fishing beyond Louisiana’s “saltwater line,” you’ll also need to purchase a Saltwater License, alongside your basic Louisiana Fishing License. This applies to all anglers over the age of 16 fishing aboard a licensed charter captain’s vessel.

Grand Isle Fishing Seasons

January
New year starts in style in Grand Isle. January is a great time for Tuna fishing. Large specimens are regularly caught fairly close to shore, due to their migration route past the Mississippi River.
February

The Tuna bite remains strong in the cold winter waters, with both Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna reaching impressive sizes. Inshore, Redfish and Speckled Trout are being caught in coastal marshes.

March

March is the last month of "winter" fishing in Grand Isle, LA. But don't let that put you off. Whether you're going offshore to tangle with Wahoo and Tuna or searching for Trout on the inshore flats, there's something biting.

April
The inshore fishing is better than ever in April, as Speckled Trout starts to move out of the back marshes and into the Gulf of Mexico. Look for them in shallow coastal waters. Offshore, warm water species are biting!
May
May in Grand Isle will leave you spoiled for choice. Mahi Mahi, White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish...it's all happening. Yellowfins are still being caught, but are 70–100 miles out – 24 hour trips are recommended.

June

The hot trolling bite just gets better and better. Meanwhile, Federal Red Snapper season opens up, letting you land tasty bottom fish within closer range of shore.

July

There's one thing everyone's talking about in July: the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo. This tournament has been taking place since 1928 and is just as fun to watch as it is to take part in. Will you catch a "Silver King?"

August

The weather is hot, but that doesn't put off the fish. Blue Marlin come within easy reach, while various types of Snapper are making fishing a tasty treat. Inshore, Trout, Redfish, and Flounder are on the cards.

September
The number of Redfish Rodeos on Grand Isle's events calendar says something about the fishing at this time of year. It's all too easy to catch your limit inshore.
October
As the waters begin to cool, large Wahoo start showing up in nearby waters again. Yellowfin Tuna start coming closer to shore as they prepare to spawn. You can catch a big one, but not as consistently.
November

The waters get colder, meaning Mahi and Billfish are a rarity. Big Yellowfin Tuna are being brought back to the dock though and inshore fishing is about as good as it gets – Trout and Reds are everywhere!

December
The offshore fishing is a little less consistent, so some of the larger boats take a break. If you do get out on the water, you'll find some of the best inshore fishing of the year.
