Fishing in Saco

If you’re looking for abundant and diverse angling in the Northeast, we have two words for you – Saco fishing! Nestled on the Saco Bay, with Saco River as one of its borders, the town of Saco has a fishing reputation that’s worth talking about.

You can come here for Trout fly fishing action, and you won’t be disappointed. However, this is just to get you started. The bay fishery is treasure-hunt material, and here you can target anything from Striped Bass and Bluefish to Pollock, Haddock, and Cod. If you’re coming to Saco for an adrenaline-pumping experience, Bluefin Tuna fishing in the bluewater will blow your mind.

There are so many fish species to go after, and the choice of trips is equally varied. You can book a 4-hour excursion for Striped Bass that will be interesting for the whole family and spend a fun day on the boat. There are also full day trips for a mixed bag, if you’d like to try a bit of everything. If bottom fishing and Tuna are on your mind, there are expeditions that last anywhere from 8–24 hours that will turn all your angling dreams into reality.

Where you’ll meet your guide depends on whether you’d like to go fishing on the river, in the bay, or beyond. You’ll find a lot of charters at the Saco River Boat Ramp and Marston's Marina.

The good news about Saco fishing adventures is that you don’t have to find your way on your own – there are plenty of experienced guides to show you a good time on the water!

Rules & Regulations

Going out with a charter usually means that you won’t have to worry about fishing licenses and ever-changing regulations. Bear in mind that if you’d like to fish for Sharks, you might need additional permits. Your guide will make it his business to keep you in the loop about the local laws and limits.

Saco Fishing Seasons

January

There’s not much going on in the waters around Saco in January. It’s very cold outside, so fish are laying low, as are most anglers.

February

The weather is still far from optimal for good fishing – Maine isn’t really known for its mild winters. You can always follow the reports, maybe there will be a couple of good days to go fly fishing for Trout on the Saco River.

March

The fishing season is slowly approaching, and while Striped Bass is still nowhere to be found, you can target some Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass on the river, as well as some sea-run Trout.

April

Let the fishing fun begin! Mid-April marks the beginning of the fishing season in Saco, and you can start off with some Bluefishing, or head to the ocean to target Haddock and other bottom dwellers.

May

Striper season is upon us! You can find good-sized Striped Bass in the bay and close to the mouth of the Saco River, and if you pair that with excellent Bluefish bite, you’ve got yourself a productive day on the water.

June

This is probably one of the best months to go fishing in Saco’s surrounding waters, teeming with excellent Stripers, Trout, and Flounder. The Tuna season is finally open at the beginning of the month, so the action is heating up.

July

It’s warm on land, and it’s hot on the water. Go after Cod, Pollock, and Haddock if you’re in the mood for bottom fishing (aka groundfishing), or book a long trip that will take you to the playground of mighty Bluefin Tuna.

August

This is THE month to go after trophy-sized fish! Tuna anglers could stumble upon some real footballs in the deep waters, bottom fish are biting, and you can even go after a variety of Sharks for a change of pace.

September

There’s still a lot to do and fish for around Saco, but the time to do it all is running out. Make the most of every day and go fishing for Stripers, the last of the Flounder, Bluefish, and Sharks. Tuna season is coming to a close, so this is your last chance to find a trophy.

October

Tuna are gone, but Cod, Pollock, and Haddock are still out there, hungry and fun to target. Closer to shore, Striped Bass are still active, as well as Bluefish, and you can go after a slew of Shark species.

November

The weather is becoming less and less forgiving, and ocean fishing conditions are following suit. There aren’t that many Striped Bass to hook, but on sunny days, you can see optimistic fly anglers on the Saco River, waiting for Trout.

December

The holiday season is upon us, so this is a good time to rest, recharge, and get ready for a new year that will hopefully be filled with new angling triumphs.
