Fishing in Nags Head

The Outer Banks are famous for their giant fish and seafaring heritage. Nags Head fishing charters certainly live up to the hype! Explore shallow sounds, ancient wrecks, and ocean currents in search of a variety of big, tasty fish. First-timers and fishing fanatics will both have a blast here. The trick is choosing the right trip.

Sound fishing charters target inshore favorites like Red Drum, Flounder, Speckled Trout, and Bluefish. The water is calm and you can fill your cooler in just a few hours, so this is a great option for beginners. Ambitious anglers should visit in spring or fall to take on giant “Bull” Red Drum.

Heading into the ocean, you start to find even bigger, tastier fish. Cobia rule the wrecks in spring, replaced by King Mackerel in fall. In the summer, you can fill the boat with Amberjack, Grouper, Tilefish, and other big bottom fish. Nearshore charters usually last 6–8 hours and are great for anybody who likes a freezer full of fresh fillets.

The offshore adventurers among you know what’s coming next. Nags Head deep sea charters let you battle Blue and White Marlin, Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo each summer. Otherwise, brave the winter winds for giant Bluefin Tuna. Whenever you go, you need eight hours minimum on these trips.

Most Nags Head fishing charters leave from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, Wanchese Marina, or Pirate’s Cove Marina in Manteo. Manteo also hosts the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament, so visit in August if you want an extra challenge. Otherwise, just grab a rod and get ready for an unforgettable day out.

Rules & Regulations

Licenses are included on all North Carolina fishing charters. Cobia, Flounder, and Seabass have strict closed seasons which may change annually, so check with your captain for current regulations and limits.

Nags Head Fishing Seasons

January

Near empty beaches, and a few inshore species. New anglers will enjoy the peace and can practice casting. Offshore adventurers will be rewarded with Bluefin Tuna this time of year.

February

February is peak Bluefin season, with giant Tuna racing through the deep currents offshore. You can also find Striped Bass, Speckled Trout, and small Red Drum inshore.

March

The inshore bite starts to pick up, with Red and Black Drum, Bluefish, Trout, and the last few Stripers. Offshore, Bluefin are still biting hard, and Yellowfin join them toward the end of the month.

April

Red is the new black. You don’t want to miss fishing for Red Drum, as their numbers will skyrocket. Farther out, Mahi Mahi join the tail end of Bluefin season.

May

Bluefin season is over, but the big game bite is only just getting started. Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo are out in force, along with the first Billfish. This is also prime time for huge Bull Red Drum inshore.

June

You get plenty of options in June: Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, and Mahi offshore. Cobia, Grouper, and Amberjack around the wrecks. Drum, Mackerel, Trout, and Bluefish in the sounds. Where do you even start!

July

July is a busy month in Nags Head, both on land and in the sea. All your bluewater favorites are out in force, while bottom fishing will fill the boat and sound fishing will pit you against a ton of different species.

August

Get your big game fix at the Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament in nearby Manteo. Otherwise, stay in the shallows to fill up on delicious Flounder, Drum, Trout, and more!

September

The weather’s cooling, but inshore fishing is rock solid. Red and Black Drum, Trout, and Spanish Mackerel can all be caught on a half day trip. Otherwise, stay out all day to battle Billfish offshore.

October

The big crowds and busy beaches of summer are over, but there's still plenty going on on the water. The first few Bluefin are showing up offshore, while huge Red Drum swarm the sounds.

November

This is the top month for giant "Smoker" King Mackerel, so get your stand-up gear ready and prepare for some arm-melting action. Too stressful? Stay inshore and catch Red Drum and Striped Bass instead.

December

The action moves back inshore. The safest bet are Striped Bass, Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum. On a nice day, venture offshore and land big Tuna.
