Fishing in Ocracoke

Ocracoke Fishing charters are perfect for a wide variety of trips. If you’re looking for some nearshore action in the Pamlico Sound, chasing after the Gulf Stream pelagics, or trying to test your skills at the deep sea wrecks, Ocracoke is the destination for you!

With the variety of experiences on offer here, it’s no surprise that the list of species you’ll be able to target doesn’t leave much to be desired. This is especially true on full day Gulf Stream trips, where each bite could be your catch of a lifetime! Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Tuna, and Wahoo are all popular targets, however, Billfish is certainly the top prize!

If you’d like to stay closer to shore, the Sound holds numerous rich nearshore spots and is home to Spanish Mackerel, Red Drum, Bluefish, and Cobia. For anglers looking for wreck fishing, the area’s underwater structures will give you ample opportunity to catch a variety of tasty bottom fish.

The fishing industry has always been a vital part of the Island’s identity. This means that you certainly won’t have to look hard to find a vessel and a captain for your adventure. Ocracoke Harbor is dotted with marinas, restaurants, and attractions placing everything you could need just a quick stroll away.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re going fishing on a charter trip, the captain will cover licenses for all guests. However, do keep in mind that if you’re planning on fishing on your own, a fishing license will be necessary. This includes fishing from the shore as well as fishing from a boat.

Ocracoke Fishing Seasons

January

With the new year, it’s time for the toughest anglers to get out to the continental shelf. Bluefin Tuna season is in full swing and it’s going to test your skills to the max. For those that are up to the challenge, the rewards are great!

February

While the Tuna action’s not letting up offshore, anglers looking for a more relaxed experience can look forward to the inshore bite heating up.

March

As the Bluefin Tuna migrate onwards, Yellowfin come to town. These hard-fighting fish may not be quite the prize that the Bluefins are but their larger population makes them a great species to target.

April

The water’s heating up and the fish are plentiful! From Redfish, Trout, Bluefish, and Black Drum inshore, to offshore pelagic newcomers such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and huge Yellowfin.

May

May is the absolute peak month for Yellowfin Tuna. However, Billfish are beginning to roll in, especially during the second half of the month. This may warrant a trip to the continental shelf offshore!

June

June is the month when Blue Marlin start showing up offshore and it goes without mention that this is the top prize for all anglers going to the bluewater. Other Billfish and pelagics are also present.

July

This is the peak of Blue Marlin season and anglers from all over the world come to the area to test their skills. However, other prized targets are also more than viable and the action’s everywhere.

August

The water temperature is still high and the Billfish bite is still strong. They’re not the only prize since Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna are all still very much present in these waters.

September

September is another great month for Billfish, however, White Marlin becomes the primary target for offshore anglers. The year-round inshore fishery is also a popular choice in the fall months.

October

The main draw in October is definitely the giant King Mackerel. Anglers looking to catch this ravenous sea predator will definitely be able to see solid action this month.

November

Bluefin Tuna are starting to show up and the Kingfish action is still as good ever. You’ll have no trouble catching the daily limit targeting these. Either way, the action is hot!

December

Bluefin Tuna season is officially here and if landing one of these deep sea beasts is your idea of a perfect Christmas gift, get on a full day charter and have it take you to the continental edge.

What anglers said about fishing in Ocracoke

During this time of year the fish are moving. Catch is harder to predict. Expect lots of cruising attempting to find the fish. Weather is unpredictable so be flexible. We did a 3/4 day and would have probably been better served with a full day.

The water is still a bit cold in late March so try to consider water temps. The up side is there are far fewer people but two weeks late to mid April and your catch will likely be even better.

Captain Doshier and his first mate Daniel were awesome. We caught our limit of amber Jack in about 30 minutes and wrestled with them the rest of the time. Trolled for king mackerel and tried to snag some triggerfish as well. Very personable and laid back, definitely will book with them again!

Great experience. Ernie was flexible on timing based upon changing weather forecasts. Boat was much larger than we expected and resulted in comfortable cruising. First mate Daniel was superb. All equipment provided was in good working condition. Captain did his best to find the fish and Danial did a great job cleaning our catch upon return to the docks. It was a great experience for our party.

There is no guarantee of what one will catch, but this was a perfect trip. Great captain and the mate, Daniel O'Neal was very helpful to the 2/3 of the party who had never been offshore before. We got lots of meet- bailing dolphin and best of all, the captain got me on my first blue marlin and Daniel help me get him to the boat!. Estimated 300#!

Ernie and Daniel had us on the fish immediately. Originally set for Saturday but Ernie let us delay for better weather on Sunday. Whole family had an awesome time and canโ€™t wait to come back for a Gulf Stream trip. Thanks Ernie and Daniel! You guy are awesome and know how to find the fish.

We had a pretty tough fishing day with the amount of wind we had. Couldn't get out to the wrecks due to the conditions. We made the most of it and got after some Spanish Mackeral and Blues. The crew was great and we will be fishing with them again next year. Everyone had a blast!
